SEOUL, Nov. 20, 2011 -– Sales of LG Electronics (LG)’s 6 Motion washing machines have exceeded more than two million units worldwide since its debut in later 2009. First introduced in October 2009, LG’s 6 Motion Direct DriveTM washing machines have recorded 2.25 million units in sales, which includes 1.25 million units of its frontloading washing machines as well as one million top-loading units.
Enabled by LG’s Inverter Direct DriveTM technology, the 6 Motion washing machine has won rave reviews. Its unique feature allows for more precise spin speed control and inner drum movements saves energy, time and gets clothes cleaner. With a range of cycles optimized for different types of fabrics and delivering a wash that is as gentle as it is thorough, LG’s 6 Motion technology goes beyond mere “laundry”.
“LG washing machines have gained a reputation as the most innovative appliances in the market today,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “6 Motion was a breakthrough when we unveiled it in 2009 and continues to lead the industry two years later.”
Due in large part to the popularity of LG’s 6 Motion washing machines, the company posted the best sales figures -– in volume and value -– for washing machines in 2010, according to figures provided by various market research companies1. In addition, LG’s front-loading washing machines have been the best-selling front loaders in the world for the past two years and the top sellers in the United States for the last four.

LG SHOWCASES RESIDENTIAL SMART GRID AT WORLD SMART GRID EXPO 2011

LG Offers Sneak Peak into its First-Ever Residential Smart Grid, Smart Place

People check out the functions of Smart Grid in front of an LG TV

SEOUL, Nov. 17, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing Smart Place at the World Smart Grid Expo 2011 in Seoul, Korea. Smart Place is a comprehensive Smart Grid network connected to homes on Jeju Island’s 185km2 Jeju Smart Grid Test-Bed, where approximately 6,000 homes are located.
Smart Grid implements information technology (IT) and telecommunications technology into existing power grids, enabling electricity providers and consumers to share real time information pertaining to energy usage, in order to maximize energy efficiency. In the case of Smart Place, Smart Grid technology is applied to homes, where many traditionally energy-intensive electronics products are used, such as home appliances and home entertainment products. Smart Place increases energy efficiency at home by reducing electricity consumption and managing the use of alternative energy.
Smart Place centers on the LG Smart Server, which functions as a gateway between the power company and the various electronics products scattered throughout a home, such as CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, Smart Refrigerators and Smart Washing Machines, as well as solar panels. Smart Server gathers real time updates on a family’s overall energy consumption and the resulting electricity bill. Using this information, the Smart Server centrally controls and manages the energy consumption of all connected devices. Equally important, depending on the availability of recycled energy or energy generated from residential solar panels, the Smart Server automatically chooses the more economic energy supply for usage.
Each device connected to the residential Smart Grid uses its own respective LG Smart Technology to further maximize energy efficiency. When the Smart Server detects the electricity bill is becoming unusually high, LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs automatically go into energy-saving mode. On a regular basis, LG Smart Refrigerators and LG Smart Air Conditioners maximize power use and cool more intensely during off-peak hours, when electricity is cheaper, and minimize energy use during peak hours. LG Smart Washing Machines perform a similar function, as they identify off-peak hours and recommend those hours for doing laundry.
While LG Electronics is the lead contractor for Smart Place, the technological achievements evidenced in Smart Place result from a synergistic effort with other LG companies, such as LG Chem, LG U+ and LG CNS.
Smart Place completed its first phase in June of this year, when LG finished construction of the required infrastructure. The second phase is currently underway and is scheduled to be finished by May 2013, when LG will have completed various tests and trials and begun expanding Smart Place to homes outside of the Jeju Smart Grid Test-Bed.
In addition to Smart Place, LG plans to expand its Smart Grid projects overseas, as evidenced in Smart Watts, a German government-funded Smart Grid project in the German city of Achen, where LG has been contracted to supply its Smart Servers and Smart Appliances.

LG 3D NOTEBOOK RECEIVES WORLD’S FIRST FLICKER-FREE CERTIFICATION

TÜV Rheinland, Europe’s Authority on Standards,
Says LG Has Solved 3D’s Most Vexing Shortcoming
A model is showing LG 3D Notebook’s TUV Rheinland certification letter.
SEOUL, Nov. 1, 2011 — LG Electronics (LG) has become the first company to be certified by a recognized authority for its flicker-free 3D notebook display. TUV Rheinland, one of the world’s leading technical, safety and certification services and Europe’s highest authority on standards, recognized the LG A530 notebook for being the first 3D notebook PC to offer a flicker-free viewing experience.
TUV issued its certification after rigorous testing of LG’s 3D display which the agency said resolved the flickering problem which has plagued all other previous 3D notebooks. Flickering screens cause discomfort when viewed for a prolonged period of time.
“Recognition from TÜV Rheinland is especially welcome given the organization’s focus on quality and safety,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics PC Business Unit. “Official certifications from leading third party authorities only help to confirm our belief that LG’s 3D technology is second to none.”
Thanks to LG’s proprietary Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) screen with Full HD 1920×1080 resolution, images on the LG A530 are significantly brighter than on shutter glasses-type 3D notebooks, meaning the LG notebook offers richer, more vivid games, movies and pictures.
The LG A530, which was introduced in Korea two months ago, is currently the top seller in the local 3D notebook segment. Behind products such as the A530, LG is well positioned to lead the global market in 3D notebooks and will be making its presence known worldwide in the coming year.

LG ANNOUNCES THIRD-QUARTER 2011 FINANCIAL RESULTS

All Business Units Report Improved Operating Income from 2010 Third Quarter
Although Losses in Mobile Communications and Affiliated Companies Took Toll
A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime
SEOUL, Oct. 26, 2011 -– LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced unaudited consolidated financial results based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending September 30, 2011. The sluggish global economy affected overall sales in the quarter, while losses on investments in affiliated companies led to a quarterly net loss. However, due to cost controls and efficiency improvements, operating income improved for all four companies compared with the same period last year.
Sales and Profit
LG posted consolidated third quarter 2011 revenues of KRW 12.9 trillion (USD 11.92 billion) a 4 percent decrease from the same period last year. The company reported an operating loss of KRW 32 billion (USD 29.57 million) versus a third-quarter 2010 operating loss of KRW 185 billion (USD 156.12 million). The KRW 414 billion (USD 382.62 million) net loss in the quarter was mainly due to a loss on investments in affiliated companies and net financial expense.
LG Home Entertainment Company shipped 6.8 million flat panel TVs from July to September, the most ever in the third quarter. Revenues decreased 7 percent from the previous year to KRW 5.37 trillion (USD 4.96 billion) as a result of weaker consumer sentiment in the global market. Operating profit improved 17 percent over the previous quarter to KRW 101 billion (USD 93.35 million) due to a stronger premium product mix of CINEMA 3D TVs and LED LCD TVs.
LG Mobile Communications Company sales decreased 8.5 percent year-on-year to KRW 2.76 trillion (USD 2.55 billion). The company posted an operating loss of KRW 139 billion (USD 128.47 million). LG plans to continuously focus on the smartphone business and increase sales of LTE (Long Term Evolution) handsets with the launch of the Optimus LTE to drive sales and profit improvements in the quarters ahead.
LG Home Appliance Company posted sales of KRW 2.7 trillion (USD 2.5 billion) in the third quarter, a 1 percent increase from the same period the year before, thanks to strong sales in emerging markets along with the growth of more energy-efficient and smarter products. Despite an increase in raw materials prices and appreciation of the Korean won, the company still managed to improve operating profit by 11 percent to KRW 70 billion (USD 64.7 million) from the same period the year before.
LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solution Company grew its third quarter revenues by 11 percent year-over-year due in large part to strong sales in Korea, the Middle East and Latin America. The company posted an operating profit of KRW 1 billion (USD 0.92 million) in a traditionally slow season for air conditioners. Although overall demand is expected to decline in the coming quarter, the company will continue to increase sales of commercial air conditioners, chillers and heaters with the introduction of more energy efficient products.
2011 4Q Business Direction and Prospects
LG Electronics expects to see modest growth in the coming months with competitive LTE smartphones, CINEMA 3D TVs and consumer-friendly, energy efficient appliances. The company will also focus on strengthening profitability through more aggressive cost control and better allocation of resources.
2011 3Q Exchange Rates Explained
LG Electronics unaudited earnings results are based on IFRS. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are converted into US dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three month period in each corresponding quarter: KRW 1,082 per USD (2011 3Q) and KRW 1,185 per USD (2010 3Q).
Earnings Conference and Conference Call
LG Electronics will hold a Korean-language earnings news conference on October 26, 2011 at 17:00 Korea Standard Time at the Woori Investment and Securities Building (4F, Woori Art Hall, 23-4 Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Korea). LG EXPANDS APPLIANCE PRODUCTION LINES IN EUROPE

LG Aiming for Top Position in Region for Washing Machines and Refrigerators

A male worker assembling the compartments of washing machines at an LG factory

WROCLAW, Oct. 20, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) today broke ground on the opening of a new production line in Wroclaw, Poland, capable of manufacturing one million washing machines and the expansion of a refrigerators line raising its output of refrigerators from 300,000 units to one million annually.
The new production lines in Wroclaw will enable LG to respond better to a range of local consumer needs and demands. A key benefit is in the reduction of time required for shipment. Previously, washing machines and a large proportion of refrigerators were shipped from Korea and China, requiring more than a month for delivery to Europe. However, with the new Wroclaw facility, the maximum time required for shipment throughout Europe will only be five days, less for closer destinations. Supply chain costs will also decrease as costs associated with transportation, storage and operations are reduced. The local economy is already reaping the benefit of the expansion, with the hiring of 800 additional workers and a 36 percent increase in local business partnerships.
“The Wroclaw facility will be LG’s cornerstone for becoming the number one refrigerator and washing machine brand in Europe by 2015,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “Our new production lines will enable us to make more products that meet the higher standards of European consumers right here in the same region where these appliances will be used.”
The refrigerators produced in Wroclaw are LG’s signature side-by-side, two-door bottom-freezer and Larder & Freezer models. The highly energy efficient side-by-side has an A++ energy rating, while the bottom-freezer is rated an outstanding A+++. The bottom-freezer is equipped with the No Plumbing feature that eliminates the need to connect the refrigerator to a water source. These two energy-efficient refrigerator models rely on LG’s Linear Compressor technology which makes the refrigerators more energy efficient and keeps food fresh longer.
The new production facility will also cover a wide range of washing machines from conventional to premium models. It will increase output to meet the high demand for the Front Load Washing Machine with Inverter Direct DriveTM Technology and the 12kg 6 Motion Direct DriveTM with A+++-20% energy rating offers consumers 20 percent more energy savings compared to washing machines with A+++ rating.

LG SmartWorld offers a dedicated home screen widget for better user accessibility, easier navigation through banner menus and auto-download via Wi-Fi for larger files. The paid app service on LG SmartWorld will be introduced market-by-market over the next several months.

Hyo-rin Min, a celebrity model of LG Optimus 3D, Sang-deok Yeo, Head of Mobile/OLED Department at LG Display and Young-bae, Na, Head of Business Marketing at LG Electronics Mobile Communication Company hold LG Optimus 3Ds and show its front views

SEOUL, Oct. 10, 2011 -– Having earlier this year introduced 3D without glasses on the Optimus 3D and the 700-nit superbright NOVA display on the Optimus Black, LG today raised the ante with a new breakthrough in the form of “True HD IPS” display.
True HD IPS display made its world debut on the new Optimus LTE Smartphone in Seoul, Korea, where both the phone and display set a new standard for best-in-class resolution on a 4G connected device. The new smartphone’s 4.5–inch True HD IPS display, developed in close collaboration with sister company LG Display, offers advanced resolution, brightness and clarity and shows colors in their most natural tones, as they were meant to be seen.
In a report recently issued by international product testing and certification agency Intertek, IPS displays perform better than AMOLED in areas of color accuracy, brightness, battery efficiency and performance.
According to LG, True HD IPS display takes the viewing experience on mobile handsets to the next level by offering:
· More information at a glance with genuine 1280 x 720 HD resolution and 16:9 screen viewing without  distortion, which are the same standards used in the television industry;
· Sharper and crisper text thanks to 329 ppi real RGB resolution;
· True natural colors that are the most comfortable to eyes;
· Automatic color adjustments applied by LG’s exclusive Mobile HD Graphic Engine;
· HD Movie Editor to create personalized HD videos quickly and easily.
“Since mobile devices are widely expected to become the main platform for media consumption in the LTE era, high resolution displays on smartphones will be even more necessary”, said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Optimus LTE with True HD IPS display will usher in a new standard by enabling users to enjoy beautiful and detailed high definition content even while on the go.”

LG EMBRACES IPS PANEL TECHNOLOGY FOR A NEW STANDARD IN MONITOR PERFORMANCE

With Expert-Tuned Color Accuracy And Wide Viewing Angle, LG’s IPS5 Monitors
Let Users Experience and Share Images As They Were Intended To Be Seen
LG IPS monitor IPS5 with a camcorder at its front.
SEOUL, Sep. 29, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) has introduced a new monitor series based on in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the IPS5. The IPS5 series is the latest version of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Award winning monitor lineups of the IPS1 and IPS6 series. The IPS5 series has been upgraded with expert color calibration to ensure that colors remain sharp and true. The IPS5 series is equipped with outstanding color reproduction technology intended for enterprise customers and photographers who require bright and realistic images.
“We’re committed to continually improving all aspects of our monitors with the best technology currently available,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “The IPS5 series is proof of that commitment, as these monitors deliver superbly accurate images with true color representation with a wide viewing angle for demanding professionals.”
Expertly Tuned Color Accuracy
By replacing TN (twisted nematic) panels with IPS, the IPS5 series provides exceptionally realistic images with enhanced color accuracy. This accuracy is further assured by a report on color-calibration prepared by LG experts, which accompanies the monitors. The IPS5 series is one of very few high-end professional graphics monitors to offer such a guarantee. In turn, customers can be assured that onscreen colors are identical to real-life colors.
Consistent Color Tone Through Consistent Color Temperature
The IPS5 monitors maintain color temperatures at an optimum level of around 6,500K (Kelvin), enabling reproductions of colors closest to the original. This consistency helps retain color impressions identical to those on the original image, so viewers can always see the image as it was intended.
Color Shift Free
Thanks to an alchemic convergence of IPS and LED, the new IPS5 monitors deliver highly advanced picture quality without any color shift. They also greatly extend viewing angle, ensuring viewers see crisp, realistic pictures from almost any position in front of the screen.
With its Dual Package feature, the IPS5 allows easy configuration of a second display, such as setting the split main monitor screen in dual mode, connecting a second monitor with a single click and showing the task bar on both monitors. Additionally, the Super Energy Saving technology makes the IPS5 as eco-friendly as it is technologically sophisticated. The IPS5P series is ergonomically designed with a height-adjustable stand which can be adjusted to almost any angle.
The IPS5 series is available this month while the IPS5P will be introduced in Europe in November.
