EPEAT Registration Recognize LG Green Leadership

An LG representative holds up the green certificate given by three certification bodies, including Intertek, the European Commission and the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, while standing in front of LG’s Curved OLED TV.

SEOUL, July 4, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced that its CURVED OLED TV has been certified energy efficient and designed with the environment in mind by three separate certification bodies: Intertek, the European Commission and the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT).

“Today’s definition of innovation is as much about how small a footprint a product leaves on nature as it is about technological advancement,” said Il-geun Kwon, Head of the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company R&D Center. “Our latest OLED TV is proof of our unwavering commitment to designing and manufacturing the most energy efficient products without sacrificing any of the benefits that they bring to our customers’ lives.”

To earn the Green Leaf Mark from Intertek, a product must be able to meet the most stringent set of performance and manufacturing standards. In addition to employing a comprehensive battery of standardized tests to evaluate a product’s environmental impact, Intertek also investigates the technologies and methods used throughout the manufacturing process. A stamp of approval from Intertek, one of the most respected testing and certification organizations in the world, is viewed as a guarantee of quality and performance.

LG’s CURVED OLED TV has also been awarded the European Commission’s EU Ecolabel. This prestigious label certifies that a product has been manufactured without negatively impacting the environment. The European Commission (EC) is the widely respected and influential executive body of the European Union (EU) and is a leading voice in pushing for greater environmental sustainability in the region.

Further highlighting its green credentials, LG’s next generation TV has been placed on EPEAT’s registry for responsibly designed and built electronic devices. EPEAT is a non-profit organization that publishes a global registry of green electronic products for the benefit of both consumers and manufacturers. To be included in EPEAT’s registry requires a product to meet no less than 24 environmental criteria related to energy efficiency, recyclability, packaging, longevity and reduction in the use of harmful materials.

Much thought went into the development of LG’s CURVED OLED TV as product designed with the environment in mind, which played a large role in the certification process. The TV’s body is constructed of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), a sustainable material that contributes to the extreme thinness (4.3mm) and light weight (17kg) of this stunning, next-generation LG display. And thanks to the company’s patented Smart Energy Saving technology, LG’s CURVED OLED TV reduces energy usage as much as 67 percent compared to conventional flat panel TVs.

CHANGI AIRPORT GROUP PARTNERS WITH LG TO TAKE WRAPS OFF SOCIAL TREE

Joint Media Art Installation Offers Innovative and Convenient Way for Travelers

to Share Video and Images with Fellow Passengers, Friends and Family

Travelers watch the vivid imagery of LG’s 64 47WV30 displays within the Social Tree installation at Changi Airport’s Terminal One.

SEOUL, June 18, 2013 ㅡ Changi Airport Group,in partnership with LG Electronics (LG), today unveiled the “Social Tree” in Changi Airport’s Terminal One. The towering 8.7m high, 11.1m wide larger-than-life installation sits at the heart of Terminal One at the Central Piazza and is designed to allow travelers arriving or passing through Singapore to easily and conveniently connect with friends and loved ones thousands of miles away.

Symbolizing the global connections offered by the airport, which bagged the Skytrax 2013 World’s Best Airport award, the hi-tech installation is comprised of 64 47-inch LG 47WV30 displays in the form of a cylindrical video wall and eight kiosks where travelers canpost images and also share photographs and videos via Facebook and email. The design furthermore incorporates 100 bars that stretch up and flex outwards, symbolizing Changi Airport’s international reach.

“We are pleased to have LG Electronics as our partner in developing The Social Tree.”Mr Yeo Kia Thye, Senior Vice President for Airport Operations, Changi Airport Group (CAG), said, “We live in a world where digital communities form part of our everyday life. We see hope to see The Social Tree grow into a digital community at Changi Airport, offering a connection over time for our passengers who may pass through Changi many times in their lives. It also provides a social element for our more than 52 million passengers each year to reach out to family and friends.”

“We are truly honored to have been selected to lead the design and development of this new Changi Airport icon,” said Il-geun Kwon, senior vice president and head of LG Electronics’ IT business unit. “Very few airports host as diverse an international audience as Changi Airport which made this project that much more visible and significant.”

Every day, Changi Airport connects thousands of passengers to over 240 cities in some 60 countries and territories around the world. Embracing this concept, the Social Tree was designed for travelers to capture photos and video via built-in cameras located in the kiosks to be shared with friends and families in any country. Travelers’photos can also be posted to the cylindrical video wall and layered over images of Singapore’s skyline, aquarium, forests, city streets and high-tech buildings, for travelers to leave a record of their time in Singapore. A password-protected account allows visitors to save images and videos in the Social Tree’s servers to be retrieved at a later date.

LG’s cutting-edge displays that form the “trunk” of the Social Tree employ IPS display technology, providing exceptionally vivid colors and crisp picture quality. The IPS panels offer a 178-degree viewing angle for a clear view of the video wall from almost any angle. The thin 6.3mm bezel around each display minimizes the gap between panels while the advanced auto calibration software maintains consistent color and brightness. Additionally, the video wall consumes relatively little energy, making it both environmentally friendly as well as cost efficient.

LG and IVI Initiate Vaccination Campaign in Africa

Effort Will Immunize 20K Ethiopians Against Cholera and AWD

Children smile for the camera with a 'Life's Good with vaccination' sign

SEOUL, June 17, 2013 — Commencing on International Day of the African Child on June 16, LG Electronics and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), in collaboration with local partners, will launch a public awareness and vaccination campaign to reduce acute watery diarrheal disease (AWD) resulting from cholera infections. The organizations expect to vaccinate more than 20,000 residents in selected districts of West Arsi Zone in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region.

LGE has been supporting IVI’s vaccine program in Ethiopia since 2010 to stem the spread of AWD. Together, the organizations conducted vaccine safety research in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) over a period of three years to confirm the vaccine’s suitability for Ethiopians. Starting next month, LG and IVI officials will visit major cities in the Oromia Region to educate citizens on the importance of the vaccine. From October to December, teams will administer free vaccinations in collaboration with the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI). The easy-to-administer liquid vaccine, which only requires two doses over a two-week period, was developed by IVI and received pre-approval from the World Health Organization.

“It has been an honor working with IVI to bring vaccines to Ethiopia and we are delighted that our contribution will be able to make such an important difference in the quality of life of Ethiopians,” said Sang-geon Nam, Executive Vice President at LG Electronics. “This endeavor is representative of LG’s ongoing mission to play a larger role as a socially caring corporate citizen on global issues.”

“LG’s sponsorship of this project has been invaluable and a crucially important response to Africa’s cholera crisis,” said Dr. Samuel Teshome, an Ethiopian scientist working with IVI. “LG has made significant investments in the biomedical field, specifically in countries affected by extreme poverty.”

Tackling big issues on the African continent has been a priority for LG for years. In partnership with LG Corp., LG Electronics introduced the “LG Hope Community” Program in 2013 to promote economic development in Ethiopian communities. LG is also focusing on creating self-sufficient farming villages through infrastructure improvement projects and productivity improvement training. Plans are being put into place to establish a vocational school to transfer LG’s technological know-how to Ethiopians and to develop programs to support the descendants of Korean War veterans in an effort to foster young talent and create job opportunities in the region.

LG’S ADVANCED VIDEO CONFERENCE SYSTEM SETS NEW BENCHMARK IN INDUSTRY

Designed to Maximize Communications Efficiency, LG Offers

High Quality H.264 Video Compression and Smart Web-based Recording

A right-side view of LG video conference system model VR5010H's camera with its speaker in front.

SEOUL, June 4, 2013 ㅡ LG Electronics (LG) today announced the launch of its new VR5010H video conference system (VCS), providing businesses with an exceptional audio-visual communications tool that supports advanced H.264 High Profile video codec and outstanding QoS (Quality of Service) technology. The VR5010H is also compatible with VCS solutions from other manufacturers and upgradable to 4-way multi codec.

Audio-visual conferencing devices are becoming more and more commonplace in the business world as companies look to trim non-essential business travel and technology gets better and more affordable. The global VCS market, worth an estimated USD 2.6 billion annually, is dominated by two U.S. companies. Together, these two Silicon Valley companies account for more than 69 percent of all VCS devices sold.

“LG offers a comprehensive lineup of world-class video conference systems for all types of corporate customers,” said Seog-ho Ro, senior vice president of LG Electronics. “Capable of meeting a wide variety of enterprise needs, our VCS products will incorporate LG’s cutting edge audio-visual transmission technologies for highly stable transmission in any conditions as well as being easy-to-use.”

LG’s VCS incorporates standard based FEC (Forward Error Correction) technology which optimizes performance on top of dynamic bandwidth adaptation technology by compensating for packet loss to ensure better audio and video quality and smoother data transmission regardless of network conditions. LG’s VR5010H can provide seamless high-definition picture quality by adopting H.264 High Profile video codec, which means almost half the network bandwidth is required by conventional VCS products’ H.264 Baseline Profile for HD transmission.

With the VR5010H, LG is introducing a number of important features and functions as standards to make video conferencing as convenient to use as possible. Dual Streaming offers greater efficiency by allowing conference participants to see each other while sending and viewing files at the same time. Dual Display technology enables the VR5010H to show content across two separate screens for professional usage. And the device’s web-based recording function eliminates the hassle of having to connect and configure additional equipment, enabling monitoring and reviewing the conference with no additional charge.

The VR5010H also comes with a universal remote so users can adjust the settings on the connected display1 in addition to being able to control the angle and direction of the camera unit. And with quick automatic focus and 7x zooming camera, low lens distortion and support for HD (1280 x 720p) screen resolution, LG’s new VCS is set to impress with amazingly crisp image quality even in the low light environments. What’s more, with enhanced noise cancelling technology, conference participants will be able concentrate on each other, not on background distractions.

LG’s 4-way multi codec model, V5500, was introduced in June of last year. LG’s VCS lineup will be available in select countries including the United States, China, Russia, and India among other markets, starting this week. To complement the VR5010H, LG will introduce a Full HD version, model name VR5500F, next month as well.

1The universal remote feature is only compatible with LG TVs.

LG TO UPDATE GOOGLE TV WITH LATEST ANDROID 4.2.2 JELLY BEAN OS

With Support for the Android NDK, LG Smart TV with Google TV

Will Provide Access to Larger, More Diverse Selection of Apps and Games

Applications supported by Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Operating System demonstrated on the LG Google TV.

SEOUL, May 16, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced that its Google TVs will be updated with the latest version of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. Available in the third quarter, the update will enable customers to enjoy more applications, including games that provide a greater level of interactivity and advanced graphics. LG is showcasing its Google TV with the new operating system at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco this week.

In addition to boosting overall performance, the latest Jelly Bean update supports the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) so Google TV owners can have the widest, most diverse selection of apps to choose from. Smartphone apps designed using the NDK will run on Google TV with little to no modifications. With NDK compatibility, users can now play more games on a bigger LG Google TV screen. This level of compatibility makes it easier for developers to enter the burgeoning Smart TV app market.

“LG’s Google TV with the latest Jelly Bean operating system and NDK support will deliver an enhanced user experience and access to more great apps,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “In addition to enabling users to enjoy advanced Android apps, the latest OS will also provide developers with new opportunities in the Smart TV arena.”

Users will also benefit from LG’s exceptional remote control options, which will make it easier to interact with the vast amount of content available on LG Google TV. In addition to the intuitive functionality of its Magic Remote Qwerty, LG will introduce a free remote control app that can turn any Android smartphone or tablet into a two-handed, touch-sensitive game controller. LG’s new controller app is the ideal control solution for the large number of interactive games set to arrive on the upgraded Google TV platform as it provides a level of control necessary to play more complex games such as football and racing simulations.

The latest update will also include LG’s patented 3D Game Changer, bringing a dimension to interactive games never seen before. 3D Game Changer produces a fully immersive effect by displaying 2D games in enhanced 3D mode, for an effect previously available only in movies filmed with 3D equipment.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will be available asan over-the-air (OTA) download for existing LG Google TVs in the United States starting in the third quarter. For a video demonstration of LG Google TV with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, please go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-WxHVwodpA.

LG COMMERCIALIZES FIRST SMARTPHONE WITH PRIVACY AND BUSINESS VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY IN U.S.

Strategic Venture with VMware and Verizon Wireless Enables

Secure Virtual Mobile Experience on LG’s Optimus Vu:

Three Optimus Vu:s showing different screens – two of them are held by models and the other one is displayed on a table.

SEOUL, May 15, 2013 ㅡ LG Electronics (LG) announced that its Optimus Vu: — known as Intuition in the United States — is the first commercialized smartphone in the U.S. on the Verizon Wireless Network to offer Privacy and Business (P&B) Virtualization. P&B Virtualization essentially divides the smartphone’s operating system in half — creating a secure, IT-controlled environment for business applications, while leaving the end user’s personal data and applications unchanged. The LG Optimus Vu: is the first of a new breed of enterprise-ready smartphones that offer the convenience of this secure, virtual work platform along with all the benefits of LG’s exceptional mobile technologies and user-friendly UX features.

The Optimus Vu: is the result of LG’s successful strategic venture with VMware, the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, and Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile network operator in the United States. This newest device follows in the footsteps of another collaborative effort, the LG Revolution for VMware® Horizon Mobile™. Winner of the coveted International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award in 2012, the device featured VMware Horizon Mobile and gave users an exciting sample of the virtual mobile experience.

Many of today’s businesses implement a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy when it comes to mobile phones in the workplace. But having work information and applications on a personal device can represent a security risk, and also can make it challenging for the user to keep personal and business-related matters separate. LG’s mobile device with P&B Virtualization provides a separate, secure virtual work environment that is accessible anywhere, anytime. Employing VMware Horizon Mobile, the LG Optimus Vu: allows users to run a second operating system, completely isolated from the one running on thedeviceitself. This makes it easy to keep work-related applications and data separate from personal ones. By reducing security risks and enhancing manageability for businesses, P&B Virtualization is also more secure than the current range of app container-based solutions available in the market.

“The Optimus Vu: with P&B Virtualization represents a giant leap forward in mobile virtualization technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Joining forces with VMware and Verizon Wireless has enabled us to create an enterprise-ready smart device that enhances productivity and convenience. Users can enjoy the versatility of having two devices in one while businesses can feel safe in the knowledge that sensitive information will be completely secure.”

“LG and VMware are addressing the challenges IT departments face every day due to BYOD and the consumerization of IT,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. “Creating a separate virtual workspace on a mobile device enables IT to provide security and control, while also reducing the burden and liability of managing the entire device. This approach strikes the best balance between addressing IT security needs and end user freedom.”

LG plans to introduce P&B Virtualization in more of its industry leading mobile devices in order to meet the growing demand for secure, business-friendly smartphones.
