LG’S NEWEST REFRIGERATORS EXPECTED TO TURN HEADS AT CES 2014

Equipped with the Innovative Door-in-Door™ Feature,

LG’s Latest Refrigerators Take User Convenience to a Whole New Level

SEOUL, Jan. 2, 2013 — LG Electronics’ (LG) latest French-door and side-by-side refrigerators boasting the innovative Door-in-Door™ feature are on display at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 7-10. Keeping food fresher for longer, the energy efficient new models make food storage and organization easier and more convenient than ever before.

“Based on customer feedback, all of our latest refrigerators are now designed with the user-friendly Door-in-Door™ feature to maximize convenience,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “And with our refrigerators being ENERGY STAR® compliant, our new lineup is expected to be popular with consumers not only in the United States but worldwide.”

Door-in-Door™ and More Convenience

Since LG first launched the Door-in-Door™ concept to consumers in 2010, LG has applied this innovative design to many of its other premium refrigerator models. LG’s convenient Door-in-Door™design makes it easier to reach frequently sought after food and beverage items and also helps reduce cold air loss from escaping the main refrigerator compartment. By helping to reduce temperature fluctuations that occur whenever the refrigerator door is opened, the Door-in-Door™ helps to keep food fresh longer.

Inverter Linear Compressor and More Freshness

LG’s proprietary Inverter Linear Compressor enables the refrigerators to provide industry-leading energy efficiency and freshness, reduced noise levels and durability. In comparison to a reciprocating drive system, the LG’s piston-driven compressor generates less internal friction and offers more precise cooling control, which ensures lower energy consumption. The Inverter Linear Compressor comes with a 10-year parts warranty.

The French door refrigerator’s Smart Cooling Plus system is designed to maintain storage conditions. Meanwhile, LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor and Dual Evaporator work quickly to adjust humidity and temperature levels, ensuring food stays fresher for longer.

Slim SpacePlusIce System

Many ice makers installed in refrigerators take up a vast amount of space, allowing less room for storage. LG’s Slim SpacePlus™ Ice System provides more shelf space and enough room for handy door bins without increasing the outer dimensions of the refrigerator.

Smart Diagnosis™

If an LG refrigerator experiences any problems, the Smart Diagnosis™ feature allows call center representatives to quickly diagnose the issue over the phone. What’s more, the Smart Diagnosis™ smartphone app allows homeowners to record and analyze signals from the refrigerator for immediate advice on repair options.

Fresh Air Filter

The Fresh Air Filter found in LG’s refrigerators uses forced air circulation and a dedicated fan to make sure the air inside is kept fresh and odor-free.

Smart Pull™ Handle

LG’s sleek and attractive Smart Pull™ Handle makes it possible to open the freezer door with a minimal amount of effort. With a simple lift of the handle, access to the freezer is quick and easy.

Visitors to LG’s booth at CES 2014 (Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204) from Tuesday, January 7 through Friday, January 10 will have the opportunity to see LG’s latest refrigerators for themselves.

With HomeChat[1], there is no learning curve because it was designed to be used with one of today’s most popular and free mobile messengers, LINE. With 310 million users worldwide, LINE is available on all major smartphone platforms: Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia Asha as well as desktops and laptops running Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. With HomeChat, there is no need to learn new commands or add another remote control to the coffee table. Everything homeowners need to communicate with their LG smart appliance is on their smartphone or desktop.
“Always at the forefront of innovation, LG is continually striving to inspire smarter consumer lifestyles in meaningful ways,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “We’re excited to be able to bring to CES our smart appliances with the newest communication and intelligence capabilities.”
2014 LG smart appliance owners will be able to control all their compatible appliances using HomeChat on a single device, for a level of convenience. Simply texting “I’m going on vacation” in HomeChat will result in the automatic response, “Should I convert to vacation mode?” which when replied in the affirmative, will turn on the refrigerator’s power-saving mode, set the robotic vacuum cleaner to sweep the floor at 09:00 every day and set the washing machine to run a wash cycle on the day before your return. Available initially in English and Korean with more languages in the pipeline.
A Complete Food Management System
Thanks to the messaging capabilities of HomeChat, new LG smart appliance owners will be able to receive real time status updates from their refrigerators no matter where they are. Family members can upload photos to the fridge from their smartphones using LINE and displayed on the refrigerator’s display panel.
What’s more, Smart Manager transforms the refrigerator into a complete food management system. With the Smart Manager’s Freshness Tracker, users can input various foods and check their expiration dates. Smart Manager also has the capability to recommend dishes to prepare based on the ingredients available in the refrigerator.
So Much More Than a Vacuum
The HOM-BOT SQUARE can be programmed to clean at set times in accordance with the needs and personal preferences of the user. Homeowners can check the cleaning history by asking HOM-BOT SQUARE “When did you last clean?” using HomeChat. The vacuum cleaner will then respond via HomeChat: “10:50 started cleaning with zigzag mode; 11:30 completed cleaning with zigzag mode.” Moreover, HOM-BOT SQUARE’s movement can be manually controlled using HomeChat.
A Washing Machine That Thinks For You
Using HomeChat, users can download up-to-date wash cycles to suit their personal needs and also receive recommendations via HomeChat if a wash cycle has been updated and needs to be downloaded again. HomeChat can also be used to remotely start a load of laundry, monitor the status of the washer, and receive push alerts via smartphone or LG Smart TV when a wash cycle is completed.
Recipe Recommendations with LG’s Smart Oven
With HomeChat™ and Recipe Search, users can converse with their smart oven to recommend recipes for specific dishes and find out which ingredients are needed for it. Conveniently, the oven will then auto-select the appropriate settings, which helps users to avoid the hassle of having to manually set the cooking mode. Also, LG’s smart oven app provides alerts when recipe updates become available, encouraging family members to whip up new and interesting meals.
Greater Convenience with NFC
With NFC Tagging and Smart Diagnosis™, customers can resolve minor issues without expensive and inconvenient home technician visits. NFC tagging also allows owners to download new wash cycles for LG washing machines.

The premium selection of products includes the latest iteration of the much acclaimed, space-saving SoundPlate (Model LAB540W), innovative Wireless Audio System (Model NP8740) and the sleek, aesthetically striking Soundbar (Model NB5540). These systems, along with a number of other head-turning products, offer rich, deeply satisfying sound along with the plethora of convenient smart connectivity features that make LG’s systems so versatile.

“TV screens may get the majority of consumers’ attention in the showroom but the unsung heroes of great home entertainment is sound,” said Byung-hoon Min, Senior Vice President of the AV Division of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “At LG, we devote a significant portion of our TV research and development on the audio experience because we believe this will be the next battleground for winning the hearts and minds of home entertainment aficionados.”

Combining Smart TV with Astonishing Sound

The LAB540W, better known as the SoundPlate, is the latest arrival to a new category of slim audio devices to accompany today’s flat screen TVs. Rising a mere 39.5mm above its base, this stylish device is impressively space efficient and can be placed directly underneath a variety of 32- to 55-inch TVs to minimize clutter. The new model is equipped with a robust 4.1 channel, 320 watt sound system and an external wireless subwoofer. This compact unit projects full-bodied audio in multiple directions, delivering an immersive, breathtaking auditory experience.

Additionally, customers can use a second screen device to wirelessly stream content to the LAB540W overa local Wi-Fi network or via Bluetooth.

Streaming High Quality Music to Multiple Rooms

LG’s Wireless Audio System, winner of a 2014 CES Innovation Award, gives users the power to choose from virtually limitless home audio configurations. This is possible because the NP8740 runs the latest mesh network technology, which includes dual band Wi-Fi support (2.4/5GHz) to deliver high quality streaming music throughout the home. Each wireless speaker not only produces rich sound with clarity and depth, but also sends the sound out in multiple directions.

Several speakers can be set up in any combination of rooms, connecting an entire house under a single system. The embedded mesh network technology also makes it possible to choose between playing the same song throughout the home (Party Mode), or different songs through each speaker (Personal Mode). What’s more, the NP8740 can connect to other audio systems for an integrated experience with greater output and control.

The Wireless Audio System allows digital audio collections to be accessed without a home network while a downloadable app turns a smartphone intoan easy-to-use master control unit. The interface even lets users seamlessly stream audio from online sources. Overall clarity is enhanced by a dual-tweeter arrangement and 24 bit/192kHz offers studio-like sound quality.

Compelling AudioSophistication in Minimalist Design

LG’s numerous Soundbar options are the perfect complement for a wide variety of TV sizes and styles. The NB5540, for instance, is a beautiful match for modern thin-bezel TVs thanks to its minimalist design and polished dark silver finish. A particularly stunning accompaniment to LG’s premium flat screen TVs, the system features 4.1 channels and 320 watts of powerful output. Despite its low profile body, the NB5540 delivers rich, room-filling audio thanks to two forward-facing and two rear-facing channel configuration. The unit also employs a Hi-Fi DAC and Analog Class D amp to ensure superior HD audio quality, minimizing the loss of detail and producing clean, natural sound.

The NB5540 supports HDMI with Audio Return Channel (ARC), enabling it to connect to a TV with a single cable. The system is also Bluetooth enabled, facilitating wireless audio streaming from smart devices such as a Smart TV or smartphone. The NB5540 can be wall-mounted or placed anywhere in the room, giving homeowners an array of installation options.

LG TO UNVEIL WORLD’S FIRST 105-INCH CURVED ULTRA HD TV AT CES 2014

LG’s CURVED ULTRA HD TV Offers Immersive 21:9 Aspect Ratio
and Astounding Picture Quality

The world’s first 21:9 aspect ratio CURVED ULTRA HD TV model 105UC9 by LG on display at CES 2014.

SEOUL, Dec. 19, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced it will be unveiling the world’s first 21:9 aspect ratio CURVED ULTRA HD TV (Model 105UC9) at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. LG’s newest premium TV is also the company’s very first CURVED ULTRA HD model. The award winning groundbreaking 105-inch (measured diagonally) 105UC9 is officially the largest curved TV ever made.

This awe-inspiring TV offers magnificent picture quality and a wide viewing angle with the ability to render the minutest detail in breathtaking clarity to create an unprecedented level of viewer immersion. The 105UC9’s cinematically proportioned 21:9 CinemaScope screen is ideal for enjoying movies as they were meant to be enjoyed. Another advantage of the extra-wide screen is that it enables users to access viewing information on the side of the screen without blocking any of the ongoing action.

Boasting an 11 million pixel (5120 x 2160) screen resolution, the 105UC9 represents the successful collaboration between LG Electronics and LG Display. In order to realize the TV’s curvature, new technology was introduced to resolve a number of issues, such as maintaining structural integrity and delivering uniform color and brightness across such a large screen. Until now, OLED panels were preferred for curved displays due to their ability to generate their own light. LG Display overcame the challenge of uneven backlighting by refining its Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology to prevent color leakage and to ensure a superior viewing experience from virtually any angle.

“LG Display has kept its dominant position in the display market with innovative and differentiated technologies,” said Yong-kee Hwang, Senior Vice President and head of LG Display’s TV Business Unit. “With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers.”

“We’re proud to reveal our 105-inch CURVED ULTRA HD TV at the world’s largest technology event,” said In-kyu Lee, Vice President and head of the Home Entertainment Company’s TV division at LG Electronics. “Claiming the world’s first and the world’s largest titles, LG’s 105UC9 employs cutting-edge technology to provide a truly unique viewing experience. We will continue to drive the next generation TV market and demonstrate that with LG, it’s all possible.”

LG OPTIMIZES SMART TV PLATFORM FOR SEAMLESS MULTI-DEVICE COMMUNICATIONS

Irrespective of OS or Brand, AllJoyn Enables Multiple Smartphones, Tablets,
Household Appliances and More to Simultaneously Connect with LG Smart TV

A LG Smart TV and a smartphone operating the AllJoyn open source software framework.

SEOUL, Dec. 4, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) will be the first company to incorporate the AllJoyn open source software framework into its Smart TV platform, giving users a new level of interoperability between devices. AllJoyn, developed by Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc., is designed to create a common language that seamlessly connects the Internet of Things, regardless of brand or operating system (OS). This new multi-device environment opens up a raft of possibilities for LG Smart TV owners.

“LG is at the forefront of the device connectivity revolution,” said Richard Choi, Senior Vice President of the Smart Business Center at LG Electronics. “LG will now enable consumers to more effortlessly connect their networked devices in the home and continues to show a strong commitment to the next generation of convergence technology.”

The software’s framework enables devices and apps to freely communicate with one another without the barriers that once kept operating systems and products from different companies separate. It will afford LG Smart TV users a previously unimaginable degree of freedom and generate new opportunities for app developers as well.

LG will incorporate AllJoyn to allow multiple devices to communicate with LG Smart TVs simultaneously, creating an expansive cross-OS environment where users can interact in new ways. Several smartphones or tablets, each running a completely different OS, can participate in the same multiplayer game on an LG Smart TV. In Mini Motor Racing, one person could steer his or her car around the track using the LG Magic Remote while the other players control their vehicles via the LG Gamepad app for mobile devices. Looking forward, LG will continue to drive future innovation in consumer services that leverage the communication between devices and LG Smart TV’s.

“LG sees great potential and huge possibilities in connecting multiple display products with one TV,” added LG’s Mr. Choi. “Facilitating true smart home convergence, LG Smart TVs will now be able to seamlessly connect to devices regardless of brand or OS, a first-of-its-kind milestone in the home entertainment industry.”

LG Program Promoting Self-Reliance in Africa and Asia Earns United Nations Accolade

Supporting UN’s Millennium Development Goals Through ‘LG Hope Series’

LG was awarded the Millennium Development Goals Award by the UN Global Compact Local Network.

SEOUL, Dec. 4, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) was recently awarded the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals*) Award by UN Global Compact Local Network at their 2013 Global Compact Value Awards Ceremony. LG Electronics received the award in recognition of its global social program, the LG Hope Series. Through this program, LG operates the LG Hope Community in Ethiopia, the LG Hope School in Kenya, the LG Hope Family in Bangladesh and the LG Hope Family in Cambodia to promote sustainable development.

Launched in 2000 and led by UN Secretary-General Ki-moon Ban, the UNGC is an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies with a particular focus on promoting corporate ethics and environmental sustainability at a global level. Global Compact Value Awards are bestowed biannually by the Local Network to companies that conduct superior CSR activities in each of six major areas: human rights, environment, labor, anti-corruption, community involvement and development and the UN’s core agenda of MDGs.

“LG Electronics is fully committed to the objectives of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, to reduce the proportion of the world population living below the poverty line by half,” said Choong-hak Lee, Senior Vice President and head of LG’s Business Support Office, responsible for corporate social responsibility. “Both the UN and LG realize that poverty is a very complex problem and to address it we need to look at all the factors that affect it, such as education, gender equality, child mortality, diseases, environmental sustainability, among others.”

LG is tackling some of the most challenging issues with the LG Hope Series. Each Hope Series project focuses on specific needs of the local population and attempts to address the causes, not just their effects, with creative, multifaceted solutions.

LG Hope Community

LG is fostering self-sufficiency in farming villages in Guta, an underdeveloped village in Ethiopia in need of external support for water and electricity. In April 2013, LG built a well in Guta to provide the village with drinking water. It also helped mitigate a food shortage and allowed the villagers to generate income from agricultural sales.

The construction of an LG-funded model farm is expected to be complete by December 2013, further helping the residents earn much-needed income. A group of Korean volunteers from Cheonan Yonam College, operated by the LG Yonam Foundation, will also participate in training programs for the cultivation of specialized crops and livestock farming. The goal of the program is to achieve a 50 percent increase in monthly household income.

In collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), LG will begin construction of a new LG Hope Technical and Vocational school in Ethiopia at the end of this year to teach young students sustainable vocational skills as Public Private Partnership (PPP). The school will offer courses on repairing electric and electronic products such as mobile phones, TVs and computers.

LG will also expand scholarships targeting the descendants of Korean War veterans in the region. This scholarship program began in 2012 with the goal of supporting approximately 100 high school students by paying for their living expenses and school tuition for three years.

Earlier this year, LG established a local office in charge of corporate social activities in Ethiopia, a first for a South Korean company. LG will focus on improving the standard of living by making the region self-sustaining, rather than relying on temporary assistance.

LG also has been supporting International Vaccine Institute’s (IVI) vaccine program in Ethiopia since 2010 to stem the spread of acute watery diarrheal disease(AWD). The organizations expect to vaccinate more than 20,000 residents in selected districts of West Arsi Zone in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region by the end of this year

LG Hope School

A new LG Hope School in Kibera, Kenya opened its door to students in August. The school was established in cooperation with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Kenya for the area’s children who lacked adequate studying facilities. The LG Hope School is capable of accommodating 480 students in a nine classroom building equipped with a modern restroom, computer room and kitchen. Since 2009, LG has helped to support 29 schools with school meals, new playgrounds, restrooms and other educational facilities that improve the learning environment.

LG Hope Family

LG Hope Family is a local infrastructure improvement project conducted in partnership with the UN WFP. The project focuses on creating physical, environmental, social and economic resilience and helps extremely impoverished individuals prepare for emergencies and learn to cope during and after a disaster.  Since 2011, LG has contributed nearly USD 1.2 million to support communities in Patharghata, the poorest district in southern Bangladesh. Since the project was launched three years ago, ponds, water ways, embankments, levees and more than 28 kilometers of roads have been developed in Bangladesh.

In Cambodia, LG identified the poorest 5,000 households from Prey Veng Province for participation in road and irrigation canal construction projects to improve living conditions. Contributions from LG provided food assistance in the form of rice, beans and cooking oil to help reduce poverty and food insecurity in the communities.

LG Hope Screen

LG brought this important cause to the people of New York City and London by using its outdoor digital billboards in Manhattan’s Times Square and Piccadilly Square as educational displays. Earlier this year, the Piccadilly Square display featured World Environment Day sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and a matching gift campaign was conducted via the Times Square billboard with proceeds going to the WFP.
