LG Bootcamp, Nurturing Tomorrow’s Innovators

New employees are one of the most valuable customers of a company and they’re also a key driving force behind its future growth. Recognizing their significance, it’s just common sense for businesses to listen to their voices as much as they listen to what consumers have to say.

In recent surveys conducted in South Korea,* it was found that Gen Zers, in particular, chose ‘Opportunities for Personal Growth’ and ‘Personal Growth and Self-realization’ as key factors for a satisfactory work life. It was clear that demand for self-development at the workplace was growing amongst younger generations. In line with such findings, LG has been running various training programs aimed at promoting the career growth of its new software developers while at the same time seeking to create a productive and strong relationship-bonding corporate culture.

One such program is the recently renamed LG Bootcamp – initially created in 2011 as the No.1 New Software Developer Training Course. The program has evolved to provide training for not only the employees of LG but also other LG Group affiliates. It effectively supports the growth of participants by providing interesting and enjoyable, yet highly demanding missions on a daily basis. The program focuses on emphasizing collaboration over competition and embracing the notion that failure is part of the learning process.

LG Bootcamp is divided into two courses: the Proficiency Course and the Project Course. The Proficiency Course specializes in enhancing basic programming skills to help new developers pass the company’s software programming proficiency test. Successful candidates then progress to the Project Course, where they form teams to work on actual software development projects.

A total of 240 new software developers participated in four Bootcamp sessions this year. In the Project Course of the third session, participants formed 19 teams and were divided into two projects: the Embedded Software Path and Data Science Path. Over a four-week period, these teams diligently worked on their respective projects, and the top two teams from each Path emerged as candidates for the Software Fighter contest – a platform showcasing the most outstanding projects of the entire course.

In the initial presentation round, teams from the Embedded Software Path showcased their projects, focusing on the intricate task of designing and implementing a multi-process operating system kernel based on a simplified operating system design. The first team unveiled ‘My One and Only OS,’ a multi-processing operating system supporting a memory monitoring app, while the second team shared their developmental journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of their operating system project.

Subsequently, the Data Science Path teams took the stage for the second round. Their projects revolved around constructing AI models and seamlessly integrating them into embedded boards. The first team introduced ‘Alpi,’ an AI speaker capable of understanding users’ emotions and delivering personalized services, while the second team introduced a unique cloud game facilitating enjoyable turtle-neck correction exercises through facial movements.

The caliber displayed by the new developers during the presentations garnered admiration from the judging panel. Among them, Kwak Jung-ho, head of HE Service Platform Development Division, emphasized that, “in the age of generative AI, the importance of being able to strategize, oversee and identify suitable program applications will rise significantly, surpassing the significance of coding proficiency.”

The event wrapped up with the Ignite session, a program that always marks the end of LG’s Software Developer Conference. During the event, the trainees had the opportunity to showcase their talents on stage. Many of the new employees showed interest in various forms of art, such as singing, playing musical instruments, dancing and sports. The theme of the Ignite session, “Art,” was chosen to highlight the connections and inspiration between technology and art. Two individuals stood out with their impressive breakdance and K-POP composition performances, leaving the audience captivated and inspired in just five minutes.

“The Bootcamp provides an opportunity to explore a spectrum of LG products, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, metaverse and web 3.0,” said Eom Wi-sang, head of Software Engineering R&D Lab. “I hope you all become developers embraced everywhere by acquiring the ability to trust colleagues and navigate complex concepts.”

A photo of the words LG Bootcamp Congratulations on the screen

While coding is a fundamental aspect of software development, LG Bootcamp recognizes that software developers require a diverse skill set encompassing software knowledge, technical expertise, requirements analysis, communication skills, teamwork and creativity. Acknowledging the long and challenging journey to becoming a software expert, LG Bootcamp seeks to transform aspiring software developers into seasoned professionals, continuously enhancing their capabilities.

The commitment to the growth of new developers entering the LG Group remains steadfast. LG Bootcamp pledges ongoing development efforts to provide continuous improvement and unwavering support. Observers are encouraged to keep a watchful eye on the transformative journey of LG’s new developers as they evolve into seasoned software experts, propelled by a supportive environment.

LG’s 118- inch LG MAGNIT TV at Luxury Suite Zone

SEOUL, Jan. 30, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing its advanced digital signage solutions at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2024 in Barcelona, Spain, from January 30 to February 2. LG will unveil its comprehensive range of display solutions tailored to the needs of retail, corporate, education and hospitality, including its Micro LED, All-in-One LED, Transparent OLED and cloud management platforms.

Inside ISE 2024’s largest booth, the LG MAGNIT lineup of micro LED displays are featured across several zones that demonstrate different usage scenes, including a digitalized control room, meeting space, luxury suite and virtual production studio. The company’s micro LED technology enables large-scale screens that can be tailored to meet customers’ specific demands and installation environments. In addition to outstanding picture quality with stunning color accuracy across a wide viewing angle, LG’s micro LED tech has undergone rigorous testing for surface flame spread and electromagnetic compatibility.

Ideal for conference rooms, LG MAGNIT All-in-One features easy-to-access, front-mounted controls, integrated speakers and a controller for convenience and simplicity. LG’s Micro LED solutions for corporate control rooms boast large screens and continuous monitoring capabilities, while LG MAGNIT for virtual production studios delivers accurate image reproduction and compatibility with various filmmaking equipment. LG’s Micro LED displays for luxury suites leverage the α (Alpha) 9 AI processor to provide mesmerizing viewing experiences and content-optimized picture quality.

LG’s 1,728-square-meter booth also presents ‘Kinetic LED’ for diverse settings such as shopping malls and airports. The striking installation comprises a kinetic screen measuring 3,670 x 6,100 millimeters and several large-size LED Fine Pitch (model LSBC019) displaying vibrant digital art that moves in sync with atmospheric music.

The Luxury Suite offers exclusive cinematic viewing experiences with the 118-inch LG MAGNIT and 49-, 55- and 65-inch UHD signage solutions featuring new art gallery-inspired picture-frame bezels (offered in three elegant colors). With Apple AirPlay, guests can stream content to LG Hotel TVs, right from their iPhone or iPad, whether it’s to watch movies and shows from their favorite apps or share what’s on their Apple devices, including photos, personal videos, games and more. Guests simply scan a unique, on-screen QR code after checking in to privately and securely pair their iPhone or iPad directly to the TV in the room for the duration of their stay.

The Corporate Zone highlights three LG MAGNIT displays: one perfect when filming CEO speeches or commercials, another that has a detachable power supply unit for use in control rooms, and the All-in-One model with embedded controller and speakers for meeting rooms. Also on show are the newly-introduced 21:9 aspect ratio, 171-inch LED All-in-One and 21:9, 105-inch LCD signage, which work well with widescreen video-conferencing platforms. These signages are also compatible with integrated solutions from LG’s partners to meet user-specific needs.

In the Retail Zone, visitors can explore solutions that enhance the shopping experience and generate advertising revenue for store operators. LG’s various digital signage for retail boutiques, restaurants, bakeries and cafes include the 79-inch Stretch LED signage, ideal for showing brand content; Transparent OLED, which serves as a digital menu board; and LG Kiosk, which provides a convenient self-service option. The company is also illustrating the ease of selecting and playing in-store advertisements through LG DOOH Ads’ Programmatic AD feature, which optimizes advertising content according to customers.

With its thin bezels, the new 55-inch modular Transparent OLED allows for an NxN-format ‘video wall’ installation that serves as an open partition while engaging shoppers. Also, LG’s double-sided LED-LCD signage (86-inch LED and 75-inch LCD) shows off the compelling possibilities for simultaneously delivering advertisements to in-store visitors and passersby. This space also demonstrates the space-efficiency and versatility of the 37-inch stretch, and 30- and 55-inch vertical Transparent OLED displays.

The Education Zone features a digital classroom equipped with LG CreateBoard – interactive digital boards (55 to 86 inches). Educators can easily load classes through its web browser and give students access via QR codes. An excellent choice for university film programs, the integrated solution for virtual production includes LED screens for displaying digitally-rendered backgrounds, LG CreateBoard for writing and OLED displays for reviewing video footage.

To enhance the customer experience, LG offers various cloud-based software solutions that facilitate the efficient management of its cutting-edge digital displays. The integrated LG Business Cloud platform lets users explore, subscribe to and manage the cloud solutions available for LG digital signage and commercial TVs. Visitors can also check out LG SuperSign Cloud, which enables content creation and distribution for digital signage, the hospitality-enhancing LG Pro:Centric Cloud and the LG ConnectedCare remote management solution.

What’s more, LG unveils its commercial display security system, LG Shield, to respond to more sophisticated cyber threats emerging from AI. LG Shield operates under webOS to protect against security threats, safeguarding central servers, apps and operating systems. Its security performance completed a global common criteria evaluation and has been granted EAL 2 certification and ISO/IEC DIS 18974.

LG Guggenheim Award Recipient Stephanie Dinkins Presents Demo of Latest AI Artwork in Progress

Dinkins, One of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in AI, Showcases Her
Latest Art on LG OLED at the Guggenheim’s ‘Late Shift’ Event

Two women are talking into a microphone as they observe Dinkins' latest works on display at ‘Late Night X Stephanie Dinkins'

SEOUL, Jan. 29, 2024 — Stephanie Dinkins presented three of her latest works in progress at ‘Late Shift x Stephanie Dinkins,’ an after-hours public program held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City on January 25. Pushing the boundaries of artistic creation with her use of AI, Dinkins is the first inaugural recipient of the 2023 LG Guggenheim Award that celebrates artists breaking new ground in technology-based art and one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in AI.

AI is integral to Dinkins’ artistic practice and vision, as she investigates ways to make AI more accessible and inclusive. She raises important questions like “What does AI need from you?” to make a point that AI needs to develop a more well-rounded perspective that better reflects the real-world.  Her projects shed light on how AI can tend to have the mindset of the majority, easily overlooking and further ostracizing those living in the grey area of society. Through her thought-provoking interactions with AI made into art, Dinkins bridges the gap between art and technology to advocate for positive change.

Her works in progress presented at Guggenheim invite the audience into the narrative of helping AI grow in social values such as care and attentiveness. Named ‘’Not the Only One Avatar image 2023 brain (N’TOO),’ ‘The Stories We Tell Our Machines,’ and ‘WisdomBot,’ Dinkins’ works build on the interaction between AI displayed on LG OLED screens and the audiences. Again, the artist pinpoints that we all have something to contribute in shaping how AI understands the world.

The ongoing theme for the ‘LG Guggenheim Art and Technology Initiative’ has been the symbiosis between technology and art where each inspires the other to explore new paths. Dinkins’ presentation of her recent works comes at a timely juncture. LG Electronics recently made a bold move during CES 2024, naming AI as the company’s focal point for the year and redefining it as ‘Affectionate Intelligence.’

LG and Guggenheim are joining hands to support more artists creating new technological and artistic expressions. Last year, Dinkins became the first inaugural recipient of the LG Guggenheim Award, a five-year multifaceted collaboration designed to research, honor and promote artists working at the intersection of art and technology.

“I am excited to have activated the Guggenheim’s rotunda as a machine learning laboratory, sharing works in progress that highlight the imperative,” said Stephanie Dinkins, LG Guggenheim Inaugural Awardee. “These works in progress inform AI systems with a broad spectrum of ideas, wisdoms, cultural touch points and stories that have sustained our communities for millennia.”

“As audience members willingly engaged with artificial intelligence entities in this unique event, their interactions served as valuable contributions,” said Noam Segal, LG Electronics Associate Curator. “These contributions, coined by Stephanie Dinkins as ‘Data Gifts’, play a crucial role in enriching the AI’s learning datasets, particularly in filling gaps where information, historical knowledge or intricate concepts are absent.”

“LG Electronics believes in technology inspiring art,” said Kate Oh, Vice President of the Brand Communication Division at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “We are privileged to provide LG OLED as a tool that, in turn, inspires artists to pioneer new paths and reach for boundless expression.”

LG and the Guggenheim Museum are committed to working together to identify and celebrate artists pushing the envelope of technology-based art. To follow the journey, please visit LG’s official website for the LG Guggenheim Art and Technology Initiative.

LG Announces 2023 Financial Results

Highest Annual Revenue in History With Home Appliance and
Vehicle Components Showing Growth for Eight Consecutive Years

A photo of the LG twin towers and the LG logo together

SEOUL, Jan. 25, 2024 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced its financial results for the year 2023, disclosing a consolidated revenue of KRW 84.2 trillion and an operating profit of KRW 3.55 trillion. This marks the third consecutive year of achieving record-breaking annual revenue. The operating profit is also solid, approaching levels seen during the prior period of pent-up demand.

Despite challenging external factors such as an economic slowdown and reduced demand, LG’s core business of home appliances and the burgeoning vehicle components business have demonstrated remarkable resilience, maintaining continuous growth for eight consecutive years. The combined revenue of these businesses exceeded KRW 40 trillion last year, a substantial increase from KRW 18 trillion in 2015. Over the same period, the proportion of these two businesses in the total revenue has risen from 32.5 percent to 47.8 percent.

The performance is attributable to LG’s strategic efforts to enhance its business portfolio. The company successfully expanded its B2B business by identifying market turning points early on and integrated new business models, including subscription services, into existing frameworks. Furthermore, LG’s innovative content and service business model, leveraging its extensive user base of hundreds of millions of products globally, has also contributed to securing robust profitability.

Looking ahead, LG is committed to a continual transformation from a mature business-oriented structure to a future growth-oriented one. In this year, the company will concentrate its capabilities on breaking through limits to maximize its business potential. Guided by the newly established Overseas Sales & Marketing Company, LG will strive for additional growth and expanded product coverage, particularly in emerging markets where there are greater growth opportunities.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company achieved an annual revenue of KRW 30.14 trillion, marking eight consecutive years of growth and ushering in the era of KRW 30 trillion. Introducing new business models including subscription services and expanding the B2B share in areas such as HVAC, components and built-in solutions contributed to this growth. The operating profit recorded an increase of over 76 percent compared to the previous year, reaching KRW 2.08 trillion.

In the coming year, the Company will accelerate a shift in its business model towards future readiness, including Direct-to-Consumer initiatives. It aims to expand the deployment of home appliance operating systems and extend subscription services to international markets. Additionally, there will be a swift progression in building smart home solutions that reflect the value of “Zero Labor Home.” In terms of products, the Company will seek to maintain its strategic approach of solidifying the premium leadership of key products, such as washing machines and refrigerators, while swiftly expanding region-specific lineups. To sustain continuous growth in the B2B sector, especially in areas like HVAC, the Company plans to strengthen its capabilities by establishing a complete, local business operation that encompasses product development, production and sales, with a focus on the evident electrification trends in regions such as North America and Europe.

The LG Vehicle component Solutions Company achieved an annual revenue of KRW 10.1 trillion and operating profit of KRW 133 billion. In its 10th year since establishment, the Company not only surpassed the KRW 10 trillion revenue mark but also demonstrated eight consecutive years of growth since it began disclosing performance results in 2015. The share of total consolidated revenue has increased to 12 percent. This year, the Company aims to drive both external growth, leveraging a substantial order backlog, and qualitative growth in its operations. In in-vehicle infotainment, the Company is dedicating efforts to secure capabilities in the area of software-defined vehicles in response to the needs of OEMs. Drawing upon its differentiated technology accumulated in the home appliance and IT sectors, the Company will seek to further enhance the in-vehicle customer experience. In the e-Powertrain area, focus will be on strengthening product capabilities and early stabilization of overseas production bases to enhance responsiveness to customer demands. Additionally, in headlamps, there are plans to expand premium product orders while simultaneously improving operational efficiency.

The LG Home Entertainment Company recorded an annual revenue of KRW 14.2 trillion and operating profit of KRW 362 billion. The webOS platform-based content and services business solidified its position as a new source of revenue, showing a significant increase in operating profit compared to the previous year. The revenue slightly decreased amid a relatively slow recovery in demand for premium products like OLED. In anticipation of a progressive recovery in TV demand this year, the Company will seek to strengthen both the top-tier OLED lineup and the QNED lineup, following a dual-track strategy to lead the premium market. Simultaneously, the Company is accelerating its transformation into a media and entertainment powerhouse. In the current year, the webOS platform business is slated for nurturing as a significant revenue-generating venture in the scale of trillions.

The LG Business Solutions Company recorded an annual revenue of KRW 5.4 trillion and operating loss of KRW 42 billion. The revenue saw a slight decrease compared to the previous year due to delays in IT demand recovery and reduced investments from key enterprises. Increased investments in future growth areas such as robotics and electric vehicle charging had an impact on profitability. In this year, the Company is positioning itself with a competitive lineup of IT products, including gaming monitors and the LG gram Pro, and will actively seek to find business opportunities targeting distinct verticals such as government agencies and schools. As a leader in LG’s B2B business, it aims to accelerate the shift from supplying single products to integrating and providing adjacent solutions. With a significant proportion of new businesses within the organization, investments will be prioritized for future preparations rather than short-term management performance.

Bringing Good Vibes to Australia via ‘Life’s Good With Optimism’ Campaign

Unveiled globally as a pivotal step in LG’s brand reinvention, the ‘Life’s Good with Optimism’ campaign is a vibrant celebration of a rejuvenated brand persona. Presenting a more dynamic and youthful brand identity, it encourages customers to approach life with optimism amid global uncertainty. LG has passionately aspired to share the revitalised brand philosophy and personify the essence of Life’s Good, while empowering people to find positivity in their everyday lives.

Following the global launch of the campaign in 2023, LG Australia celebrated the campaign with a series of media activities and a celebration with employees at its new Australian offices in Parramatta, Sydney. The company showcased how the recognisable Life’s Good slogan, first coined in Australia in 1999 as a reflection of the Aussie zest for life, inspires the next generation to embrace life with bravery.

LG collaborated with campaign ambassador and renowned musician turned athlete Cody Simpson, whose journey embodies the characteristics of brave optimism, overcoming challenges and defying expectations. Ahead of the celebrations, Cody Simpson spoke with Channel 7 Sunrise and News Corporation about the campaign and his story of being an ambassador and approaching life with positivity, in a bid to carve his own path. Sunrise ran a week-long LG product giveaway with the LG StanbyME, LG TONE earbuds and LG gram – innovations that align with the wants and needs of young Australians.

Prior to his interview, Cody participated in an inspiring panel discussion at the Life’s Good with Optimism celebratory, hosted at LG’s new Australian office. Livestreamed from his training pool on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, Cody was joined by author and artist Emma Carey and LG Australia Marketing Director, Gemma Lemieux, for a discussion about optimism and positivity, facilitated by Australian media personality and Sunrise consumer correspondent Shaun White.

Discussing what is behind the campaign in Australia with Gemma Lemieux, Cody and Emma shared pivotal moments where embracing optimism set them on a path to lead better lives. Media, influencers and LG Australia employees around the country listened to the panel both in person and virtually, where Cody shared more about his late-in-life career change, while Emma talked about her journey of learning to walk again after falling 14,000 feet (about half the height of Mount Everest) in a skydiving accident.

Meanwhile, a Life’s Good reporter circled the local Parramatta area and the LG office interviewing consumers and employees on camera to better understand and uncover what locally are the sources of happiness and optimism for the future.

The Life’s Good with Optimism campaign was not complete without celebrating LG Australia’s employees. Upon arrival to the office, each staff member was greeted with a heart-shaped cookie and at their desk, a red candy apple awaited featuring an optimism affirmation and a red heart-shaped balloon.

Enrich Your Everyday Life With LG Lifestyle Screens

A photo a car trunk open with two people watching the LG StandbyME GO screen

From horses and carriages to cars, airplanes, and now drones and hyperloops, innovations in transportation have consistently reshaped human life, making it easier for people to live life on the go. Meanwhile, the rise of OTT platforms has given people the freedom to watch their favorite content at their convenience, anytime and anywhere. However, limitations persisted in terms of screen devices that wouldn’t allow content to be consumed wherever one may desire, until the debut of the LG StanbyME and LG StanbyME Go.

The StanbyME lineup began with an experimental question posed by a designer at LG’s HE Design Lab: “What if my TV could move to wherever I am, whenever I want to watch it?” This was the moment of curiosity that sparked innovation, transforming and reimagining the TV experience.

From the outset, the designs of the two Lifestyle Screens had to be different, as the LG HE Design Lab team was given the challenge to conceptualize a screen that could be ‘on the go.’ Deviating from the traditional TV design, the team created a product with no complex components visible on the back, featuring a simple frame and minimalist edge stand to maximize space utilization and deliver flexibility that blends into any composition.

With the appearance and functionality of a carry bag, the StanbyME Go is purposefully designed to withstand shock, vibration and chemical reactions, providing unparalleled portability and durability. For a heightened experience with better interaction, the display movement intends to closely match the user’s posture.

Traditionally, portability has not been closely associated with TV products, but LG sought to pioneer versatile lifestyle screens that expand the role of TVs far beyond image broadcasting. The StanbyME and StanbyME Go are companions for everyday life; they can transform into recipe books when cooking in the kitchen, sheet music when playing the piano, and small outdoor movie theaters when camping, reimagining the way users engage with TVs.

When selecting which TV to purchase, the foremost consideration should be how well it fits into your space. With the ability to easily change their location, the StanbyME and StanbyME Go stand out as exceptional choices to set the ideal mood in any space.

Unlocking new possibilities for creating unique mood and experiences, the StanbyME and StanbyME Go offer portability that allows users to carry or position them wherever they desire. Enjoy a movie night in your cozy bedroom, soft music on the terrace of your home café, a workout in your home gym or a celebration message in a party room. With unbounded imagination, the possibilities are endless.

However, why limit your TV experience to the indoors? The StanbyME Go has created new on-the-go entertainment opportunities for outdoor use with its great portability and versatility. The StanbyME Go can serve as a digital campfire for relaxed downtime or transform into a lively board game hub during family road trips. Featuring a turntable skin that enables users to immerse themselves in music and create a relaxing mood on the beach, this all-round lifestyle screen ensures hours of enjoyable entertainment for all.

LG’s innovative water heater enhances user convenience as well, offering seamless remote control and handy maintenance notifications via LG ThinQ™ app.

The company’s Multi-Position Air Handler Heat Pump provides homeowners with a new level of flexibility and comfort, even in cold climate zones. LG Opens New Scroll Compressor Production Line in Mexico

Increased Manufacturing Capacity to Strengthen Company’s Competitiveness,
Help It Meet Growing Demand From North American Businesses

A photo of LG’s factory in Monterrey, Mexico

SEOUL, Jan. 19, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) announces the opening of a new scroll compressor production line at its factory in Monterrey, Mexico. The new line bolsters LG’s scroll compressor manufacturing infrastructure, enabling the company to produce more of its acclaimed, eco-conscious solutions while creating a shorter supply chain for servicing customers across North America.

LG’s decision to establish a production line in Mexico comes at a time when many U.S. heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) manufacturers are facing challenges due to escalating logistical disruptions. The strategic move places an LG scroll compressor production base in close proximity to key North American markets; setting up a production/logistics system that will help the company better respond to regional demand and lessen the impact on customers of factors such as logistic issues.

LG’s scroll compressors play a major role in the company’s HVAC components business. At AHR Expo 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia, LG showcased its energy-efficient Gen 3 Scroll Compressors for residential air conditioners and heat pumps, as well as large-capacity scroll compressors for commercial system air conditioning.

Designed with the future in mind, Gen 3 Scroll Compressors are symbolic of LG’s continuing leadership in HVAC innovation. In anticipation of refrigerant regulations taking effect in 2025,1 and in line with the company’s commitment to the environment and sustainability, the compressors utilize low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. With GWPs less than 700 – far lower than the 2,088 GWP of R410A – these refrigerants easily meet the newest eco-focused standards for refrigerants. The structure of the Gen 3 Scroll Compressors also helps to ensure compliance with the latest efficiency standards2 by reducing energy waste and heat loss.

“The new, state-of-the-art production line in Mexico will enable us to produce more of our eco-conscious scroll compressors and fortify our ability to service the North American market,” said Kim Yang-sun, head of the Component Solution Business Unit at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG will continue to provide advanced technologies and components to meet the diverse needs of its global customers.”
