SEOUL, March 27, 2024 – LG Electronics (LG) has been named 2024 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. This honor recognizes LG’s exemplary commitment to fighting climate change and protecting the environment through leadership in ENERGY STAR certified products and promotions. This marks the 11th time since 2012 that LG has been named Partner of the Year.

“ENERGY STAR supports LG’s ‘Innovation for a Better Life’ brand mission, which means creating a better life for people and a better future for our planet through smart life solutions,” said Chris Jung, president and CEO, LG Electronics North America. “2023 marked an inflection point for LG’s strategy to help drive the electrification movement across America with ENERGY STAR certified products – from heat-pump-enabled HVAC systems, water heaters and clothes dryers to induction cooktops and EV chargers, as well as energy storage and management systems – all enabling broader decarbonization goals.”

The EPA recognized LG for its robust participation in various ENERGY STAR campaigns and promotions, helping to educate tens of millions of American consumers about greener living with LG and ENERGY STAR, driving a record 8.3 billion consumer impressions. The 2024 Partner of the Year award recognizes a number of key LG ENERGY STAR accomplishments last year.

LG was the first to certify induction cooktops and ranges to the new ENERGY STAR cooking specification finalized in October 2023. LG also was ENERGY STAR Partner to certify dishwashers to the ENERGY STAR Version 7 specification, and all new models earned the “ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2023” designation.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan congratulated LG and other ENERGY STAR award winners for “innovation and leadership in delivering cost-effective energy efficient solutions that create jobs, address climate change, and contribute to a healthier environment for all.” He said, “President Biden’s Investing in America agenda creates unprecedented opportunity to build a clean energy economy, and private sector partners through programs like ENERGY STAR are leading the way.”

Each year, the ENERGY STAR program honors a select group of businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to energy efficiency and the transition to a clean energy economy. ENERGY STAR award winners lead their industries in the production, sale and adoption of energy-efficient products, homes, buildings, services and strategies. These efforts have saved more than 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity over the past 30 years.

LG’s Versatile Household Helper Brings the ‘Zero Labor Home’ a Step Closer

A picture of the LG AI Agents in a set up area with LG products

Advanced technologies are making life smarter and more convenient. At home, our living spaces have been upgraded through an ever-expanding ecosystem of connected appliances, devices and technologies. However, despite the time-saving benefits of these impressive innovations, the daily chores we love to avoid haven’t gone away just quite yet. Dedicated to realizing the Zero Labor Home, LG recently brought ‘the complete liberation from housework’ a step closer with the introduction of its groundbreaking household companion, the LG Smart Home AI Agent.

A picture of two LG AI Agents

Although small in stature, LG’s Smart Home AI Agent has outsized capabilities. Not only does it act as a hub seamlessly connecting and controlling a wide range of home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) devices,1 it also independently navigates its way around the house thanks to a clever, two-legged wheel design and a raft of cutting-edge tech. Built-in cameras, microphones and various sensors enable LG’s little AI Agent to collect a variety of data from the surrounding environment, which it then leverages to effectively monitor and manage the home.

Captured through multi-modal sensing, the collected data is processed and analyzed by the LG home appliance AI platform. This makes it possible for the Smart Home AI Agent to comprehend users’ intentions such as voices and facial expressions, understand its surroundings and recommend specific courses of action (such as activating or changing the settings of a particular connected appliance or device) to create greater ease, simplicity and comfort from the burden of housework.

A picture of people looking at the LG AI Agents on display

At KBIS 2024 in Las Vegas this February, LG’s versatile Smart Home AI Agent highlighted the progress the company is making toward achieving the Zero Labor Home. Beyond its many abilities as a butler, assistant and companion, the diminutive robot is also quite the dancer. Before an enthralled audience, a group of perfectly-in-sync Smart Home AI Agents showed off their skills on the dancefloor with an endearing and entertaining choreographed routine.

Live demonstrations and short videos focusing on real-life usage scenarios at LG’s booth revealed how the AI Agent can help at home, from answering user’s questions, to greeting visitors at the door, to delivering useful notifications from connected appliances and other smart home devices.

A picture of the LG AI Agent showing the inside of a refrigerator and helping with tasks at home

In the booth’s Laundry section, the robot assumed the duties of a personal butler, offering up useful information, such as when the washing has finished, and helpful suggestions, like the best way to care for one’s laundry. The Kitchen section introduced the AI Agent as a convenient mobile hub and home assistant, seamlessly connecting with LG’s advanced kitchen appliances and presenting delicious recipes based on available ingredients. Inside the Living section, the Agent showed how it can be a valuable companion, notifying users when a visitor has arrived, inspecting each room as an indoor security officer, and even turning off the smart lightings when everyone has gone to bed.

Through LG’s collaboration with Microsoft, the Smart Home AI Agent integrates both the Azure AI Speech Service, which is based on voice recognition and voice synthesis technology, and the Azure OpenAI Service. Microsoft’s advanced Azure AI solutions help to ensure accurate voice recognition and give the robot its aptitude for comprehending nuanced commands, even in noisy environments like the Las Vegas Convention Center – the venue for KBIS 2024.

A picture of a person holding a tablet next to the LG AI Agent

What’s more, the AI Agent’s Large Language Model (LLM)-based generative AI conversation service enables a more sophisticated level of robot-human interaction. Users can enjoy having natural, two-way conversations on various topics and conveniently control their home appliances with casually-spoken voice commands. Additionally, utilizing voice and facial recognition technology, LG’s intelligent, little home agent can distinguish between different users. To show its own ‘personality’ and ‘emotions,’ the robot changes the expressions on its face display, and can also convey its reaction to events and user interactions through movements generated by its articulated leg joints.

With ThinQ integration and the expansion of its open platform ecosystem, LG aims to accelerate both the adoption of the Smart Home AI Agent and the realization of its goal to liberate customers from the burden of household chores. Much like ThinQ UP appliances, the AI Agent will be able to receive continuous upgrades via the ThinQ app,2 providing users with an evolving, personalized smart living platform and a smart home solution.

A genuine game-changer, the LG Smart Home AI Agent is set to transform the way we interact with our living spaces, bringing us that much nearer to the realization of the Zero Labor Home.

LG Magna Acquires Cyber Security Management System Certification

Verification From Leading Certification Organization Confirms Company’s
Commitment to Protecting Its Vehicle Components Against Evolving Cyber Threats

Cyber Security Management System certificate

SEOUL, Mar. 25, 2024 — LG Magna e-Powertrain (LG Magna), the joint venture of LG Electronics (LG) and Magna International (Magna), announces it has received Cyber Security Management System (CSMS, ISO/SAE 21434:2021) certification from global certification organization, TÜV Rheinland. The certification indicates LG Magna is in full compliance with relevant vehicle cybersecurity regulations and requirements and has implemented a comprehensive security system covering component design, development, post-development cybersecurity activity and management.

An area of growing importance, automotive cybersecurity is set to take center stage in the mobility sector when WP.29 UNECE R155 cybersecurity regulations come into effect. From July 2024, all vehicles produced by automotive OEMs must meet the newly established suite of cybersecurity management regulation to obtain type approval, which is a prerequisite for selling vehicles in 56 countries, including EU member states, the UK, Japan and South Korea.

Countries that have adopted the regulation require automakers to prepare all components and systems for cybersecurity threats throughout the entirety of their vehicles’ lifecycles. ISO/SAE 21434, an international standard related to vehicle cybersecurity, defines the processes for establishing and maintaining cybersecurity, from the planning and development stage through to vehicle manufacturing, maintenance and disposal.

LG Magna is setting up a robust cybersecurity framework to ensure it can meet the increasing demand from global automakers for advanced, highly secure vehicle components. The company has created an exhaustive cybersecurity process that is applied, and systematically updated, across the life of each product. The process includes identifying and assessing product security threats as well as developing appropriate response strategies in line with ISO/SAE 21434 requirements. Additionally, risk monitoring systems and processes for swift issue remediation have been put in place.

A respected innovation partner, LG continues to expand its presence in the global automotive components and solution market. The Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company is acknowledged for its capabilities in in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, LG Magna boasts strength in electric vehicle powertrains, while ZKW is a leader in advanced vehicle lighting systems. Established in 2021, LG Magna has further solidified its position as a trusted vehicle components supplier by securing CSMS certification.

“With vehicle cyberattacks on the rise, the demand from automakers for component solutions that ensure robust cybersecurity is growing at a rapid pace,” said LG Magna CEO Cheong Won-suk. “As a major global vehicle parts supplier, LG Magna aims to proactively address any security vulnerabilities and continuously strengthen its systems and processes.”

Clean Water and Sustainable Lifestyle: LG’s Mindful Innovations

An illustration of the earth with the words '22 March World Water Day'

Observed every year on March 22, World Water Day serves as an important reminder of the need to protect and preserve what many would call our most valuable natural resource: clean, drinkable water. A long-time supporter of World Water Day, LG continues to help consumers enjoy healthy, life-sustaining water with its innovative filtration systems and state-of-the-art hygiene-enhancing technologies.

A picture of a table with the LG PuriCare and different objects next to it

Clean and Healthy Drinking Water
Access to clean, healthy drinking water is essential to our wellbeing. Without it, neither the individual nor society as a whole can flourish. Delivering effective water purification in the home, the LG PuriCare water purifier provides reliably clean H2O at the touch of a button.

The PuriCare’s cutting-edge Tankless technology, which removes the need for a dedicated water storage tank, keeps users safe by preventing the growth of microorganisms, and maintains the freshness of the water being dispensed. Also, a 4-stage filtration system helps extract heavy metals, such as mercury and lead.1

An image of the LG PuriCare in close-up

Adding to the hygienic performance of the PuriCare water purifier is the use of LG’s UVnano™ technology.2 Operating automatically once every hour, UVnano employs ultraviolet light to maintain the cleanliness of the inside of the water outlet; reducing the presence of bacteria on the outlet’s nozzle by 99.99 percent.3

A picture of a person getting water from the LG ThinQ water dispenser

UVnano can also be found in a variety of other LG products, including the company’s advanced refrigerators. LG’s InstaView™ fridges (and models from many other lineups as well) apply UVnano tech to their built-in water dispensers, giving users easy access to hygienic water for drinking or cooking. 4

Tumbler Care Solution for Sustainable Living
Water conservation, like the availability of potable water, is a key ingredient for a sustainable future. A simple way that one can start to effect positive change is by choosing reusable cups over disposable ones. The production of single-use plastic water bottles requires substantial amounts of water, 4 whereas reusable water bottles have a much lower environmental footprint. 5

Representative of the company’s Better Life for All ESG commitment, the innovative mycup tumbler washer presents another effective way to keep one’s drinking water clean while also supporting water conservation efforts. Incorporating the eco-conscious Bubble-Jet technology, mycup hygienically cleanses users’ drinking tumblers while using only a modest amount of water. 6 The unique device also promotes sustainability through encouraging people to choose reusable tumblers instead of disposable cups.

A close-up picture of the mycup tumbler washer

The washer’s two cleaning courses – Quick Wash and Extra Wash – use water heated to 65 degrees Celsius and LG’s water-saving Bubble-Jet technology to ensure a thorough and sanitary cleaning. Great for a speedy wash when time is of the essence, the Quick Wash course takes just 30 seconds to run. For a complete clean and dry, the Extra Wash course first washes the tumbler with multi-directional water jets, and then gently dries it with hot, powerful airflow.

Through its innovative water-purifying and hygiene-enhancing home appliances, LG is empowering people everywhere to live healthier and more sustainably. The company hopes that everyone has the opportunity this World Water Day to reflect on their relationship with water, and consider what they can do to make a positive difference, starting with small steps at home.

Stay tuned to LG Newsroom to learn more about LG’s environmentally- responsible home appliances.

1 Issued by the Korea Institute for Water Technology Certification (KIWATEC) following South Korea’s Law for the Management of Drinking Water. LG PuriCare water purifier exceeds the required standard for the removal of heavy metals, including mercury, lead, iron, aluminum, copper, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, and manganese.
2 UVnano is a compound word of UV (ultraviolet) and nanometer, the unit of UV.
3 Internal evaluations based on test results conducted by Korean test institutes KTL (21.3) and KCL (21.2) on the UV-LED module (on Self Care mode) demonstrated 99.99 percent sterilizing effectiveness within the water outlet of the PuriCare water purifier. Results may differ depending on actual usage and other external factors.
4 According to a 2011 study by the Water Footprint Network, approximately 1.4 gallons (5.3 liters) of water are needed to produce a standard single-use plastic water or soda bottle. (https://foodprint.org/blog/plastic-water-bottle/)
5 Americans are estimated to use 120 billion disposable cups annually. Substituting a single disposable cup daily would conserve 23 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, 281 gallons of water, and prevent 16 pounds of solid waste from reaching landfills annually. In this installment of On the Job, we go inside LG Labs, LG’s marketing platform established to deliver experimental and innovative product and service experiences to its customers. We’re here to learn more about how it brings one-of-a-kind products and service experiences to customers.

As it transforms into a younger and innovative company, LG is fully committed to delivering a consistent supply of groundbreaking products and technologies that appeal to the younger generation. Playing a key role in this shift is LG Labs, a platform established to push the limits of innovation and turn imagination into reality by doing something that doesn’t come natural to most – thinking outside the box.

An illustration of LG Labs by Numbers with images and titles with numbers

Since making its world debut at CES 2023, LG Labs has been presenting some of the most experimental and innovative products and services to global customers. Set up to bring a younger and more innovative feel to the LG brand, LG Labs’ purpose is to develop products that resonate with the younger generation, helping it build strong and lasting brand values that will be crucial to sustaining its leadership status into the future.

“If we discover an innovative idea that can provide new, unique experiences to customers, it doesn’t matter if it is low in business priority or small in market size,” explained Kong Dae-won, leader of LG Labs. “Even before launch, LG Labs actively engages with real customers through various channels and considers their honest feedback, providing us more opportunities to bring our potentially game-changing ideas to life.”

To decide which product to develop, LG Labs brings together experts from LG Global Marketing Group, Design Management Center, CX Center, Quality Management Center and other related departments. The questions every LG Labs expert must ask themself are: Is this something we’ve never tried before? Is it a new concept for the industry? And does it have business potential?

For example, DukeBox, which was unveiled at CES 2024, creates an entirely new product category and unique music experience by combining a vacuum tube motif with Transparent OLED tech. In fact, despite launching only a year ago, LG Labs has already invented several never-before-seen products including DUOBO, Bon Voyage and brid.zzz.

“We felt it was important to bring our innovations to customers directly and provide the opportunity to experience our innovative ideas in person,” said Kong Dae-won. “Over the past year, brid.zzz, Bon Voyage and DUOBO were featured in the LG Labs experience zone at offline events in South Korea, including Wanderlust Korea, Isegye Festival and Go Out Camp Festival. As a result, we were able to reach more than 40,000 customers and received invaluable feedback from more than 2,000 visitors.”

This year’s CES LG Labs booth was twice the size of last year’s booth, and the response from visitors was twice the scale as well. DukeBox was a big hit, especially with the big music labels in attendance as it fit seamlessly with their content and music. As a result, LG is currently in talks with a famous label on a potential collaboration that would undoubtedly strike a chord with young music fans.

Sought-after Industry Accolade Confirms the Impressive Quality and
Performance of Company’s Diverse HVAC Solutions

A photo of LG Air Handling Unit (AHU) and its certification from Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Performance Award

SEOUL, Mar. 20, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) has received the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Performance Award for the seventh year in a row. The award underscores the excellence of LG’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions, which continue to set the standard for performance, efficiency and reliability.

Founded in 1953, AHRI is a respected international trade association for manufacturers of HVAC, refrigeration and water heating solutions. Its current membership includes more than 350 companies, representing countries and territories from all over the world.

The product evaluations required to determine which companies will ultimately receive an AHRI Performance Award are largely carried out by Intertek, the respected third-party testing, certification and inspection organization.

For the third consecutive year (from 2021 to 2023), a total of 62 LG HVAC solutions across six product categories successfully passed AHRI’s rigorous evaluation process. The assessed LG products represent the following HVAC categories: Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF), Unitary Small Heat Pump (USHP), Water-Cooled Chiller (WCCL), Air-Cooled Chiller (ACCL) and Air Handling Unit (AHU).

The Multi V large-capacity outdoor unit, one of the outstanding LG solutions evaluated for the latest AHRI Performance Award, leverages the company’s renowned Inverter Compressor to deliver a powerful, energy-efficient performance. Particularly popular with customers in Northern Hemisphere countries, where winters can be exceptionally harsh, LG’s premier VRF system provides reliable and effective indoor heating, even in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius (negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit).

Evaluated in the USHP category, which includes mixed-matched coils and wall-mounted heat pumps, the Multi V S is a compact yet powerful VRF solution offering low operating costs and high efficiency. Well-suited to small offices, and apartments with limited balcony space, the Multi V S employs environmentally friendly refrigerant and boasts LG’s durable Ocean Black Fin, and a variety of advanced sensing control functionalities.

Receiving the award for the first time, LG’s AHU ensures a fresh and comfortable indoor environment by controlling indoor heating and cooling, ventilating and humidification.

LG’s Core Tech sets the company’s HVAC products apart with independently developed and manufactured key components of its HVAC solutions, such as compressors and motors. Furthermore, LG maintains a proactive approach to research and development investment, focused on advancing technologies including heat exchangers, inverters and heat pumps.

“Earning the AHRI Performance Award for seven straight years is a significant milestone and a testament to the quality and dependability of LG’s HVAC solutions,” said James Lee, head of the Air Solution Business Unit at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We will continue to expand our presence in the global HVAC market, providing efficient, eco-conscious solutions that customers can depend on, year after year.”

SEOUL, Mar. 12, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is making a strategic investment move to expedite the advancement of its capabilities in service robotics, a key new business area of the company.

LG has executed a stock purchase agreement to acquire a stake in Bear Robotics, a prominent Silicon Valley-based startup specializing in AI-driven autonomous service robots, through an investment of USD 60 million.

Rather than seeking short-term returns, this strategic investment is aimed at bolstering LG’s portfolio for long-term growth. Upon closing the stock purchase, the company will hold the largest portion of shares in Bear Robotics on a single-shareholder basis.

At CES 2024, LG’s CEO William Cho had discussed such potential equity investments, stating, “In the service robotics market, we’re focusing primarily on areas such as delivery and logistics. However, we are carefully considering future directions, keeping open the possibility of equity investments or mergers and acquisitions.”

Founded in 2017 under the leadership of CEO John Ha, a former Senior Software Engineer and Technical Lead at Google, Bear Robotics has gained recognition for its AI-powered indoor delivery robots catering to markets in the United States, South Korea and Japan. With this understanding, LG views this strategic investment as a pivotal opportunity to propel its robot business capabilities.

With years of experience in the robot business, LG has accumulated expertise in deploying robot solutions across various commercial spaces such as airports, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, retail stores, museums, smart warehouses and golf courses. LG operates a facility dedicated to the production of service robots at the LG Future Park in Gumi and boasts world-class capabilities in management of quality, supply chain and customer services.

By combining Bear Robotics’ world-class R&D talents and software platform expertise with its own strengths, LG aims to spearhead efforts in standardizing robot platforms to significantly reduce market-entry costs, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and fostering synergies. “Just as Android revolutionized the smartphone era, standardized open platforms are essential for the activation of the robot market,” remarked Bear Robotics CEO John Ha.

Charting a Course for Future Growth in the Service Robotics Market

In recent years, LG has strategically reallocated resources towards high-growth sectors for the future, aligning with market dynamics and the strategic significance of its business models. The investment in Bear Robotics epitomizes LG’s dedication in accelerating the advancement of its service robot sector, a pivotal component of its future growth strategy.

LG has been nurturing its robot business as one of its future core pillars. From the deployment of guide robots at Incheon International Airport in 2017, it has progressively introduced tailored solutions for diverse commercial settings, encompassing delivery and disinfection functionalities. Since the preceding year, LG has actively pursued expansion into international markets including the United States, Japan and Southeast Asia.

The service robotics market is expected to experience rapid growth, propelled by the rapid advancement of technologies such as AI and communication. On a global scale, the market is anticipated to grow from USD 36.2 billion in 2021 to USD 103.3 billion by 2026.

Last year, LG unveiled its Future Vision 2030, outlining its goal of evolving into a Smart Life Solution Company that can seamlessly connect and expand customer experiences across various domains, including home, commercial, mobility and virtual spaces. Aligned with this vision, LG aims to achieve the ‘Triple Seven’ goal: an average growth rate and operating profit of seven percent or more, alongside an enterprise value translating into an EBITDA ratio of seven.

“As the service robot market enters a period of growth, this equity investment will significantly contribute to securing a ‘Winning Competitive-edge’ for the company,” emphasized Lee Sam-soo, chief strategy officer at LG Electronics. “From a mid- to long-term perspective, we will seek to develop our robot business into a new growth engine, exploring various opportunities through the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as Embodied AI and robotic manipulation.”
