[Executive Corner] Reinventing Services With Customers at Heart

For consumers, it’s the ‘experience’ that counts. According to PwC, 73 percent of all customers place experience near the top of their checklist when making purchasing decisions, following only price and product quality in order of importance.

LG, a company that strives to ensure that ‘Life’s Good’ for all, has prioritized the art of providing F.U.N. first, unique and new – core values for customers.

An illustration of LG products with the words First, Unique and New Experiences next to them

To successfully deliver the types of experiences that customers desire, LG first had to make sure that all parts of the organization were aligned and properly equipped for the task at hand. In 2024, new CX performance management system is applied to the entire executive organization structure – not just Korean executives at the company’s headquarters but global executives and employees in charge of sales, manufacturing and management – with a view to adding CX to other crucial measurements of overall business performance, such as sales and operating profit.

The data from the CX indicator is analyzed to assess the various teams involved and to instill a ‘customer-first’ mindset throughout the entire company. The definition of ‘customer’ in this equation is not limited to end-users, but includes business partners and relevant internal departments as well.

An illustration of a man sitting on a desk with an LG Gram and the logo behind him

The company made meaningful changes by promoting various customer value innovation activities. However, it was identified that a process was needed to properly evaluate business performance as well as reward the achievement of increased levels of customer satisfaction.

An illustration of words and shapes explainging LG's Customer Experience Journey

Accordingly, starting from this year, all LG Electronics executives will be evaluated based on the level of customer satisfaction within the organizations under their purview, and also on whether or not they have achieved their allotted tasks. Customer satisfaction is graded based on LG’s in-house-developed measurement tool, which quantifies the satisfaction level of LG customers during each stage of the customer experience journey.

An illustration of a girl and a mobile-like image in the back with a computer

Now, each organization is charged with the mission of determining how it will go about innovating target customers’ experiences. In this way, each unit or team can give in-depth consideration to the important question of “What constitutes a differentiated experience from the customers’ perspective?” and then gauge whether or not a specific CX innovation can be realized.

For teams that don’t work directly with customers, CX tasks can include identifying the relevant customer groups, such as internal departments or suppliers, for a certain aspect or piece of organizational work, and generating appropriate and actionable innovation activities to drive meaningful results. LG strongly believes that customer value innovation is not just the domain of ‘management’ or select customer-facing teams. Rather, it takes a whole company working together to consistently create it, with each person adopting a ‘customer-first’ mindset and seeking to view all pertinent matters from the customer’s perspective.

This belief reflects LG CEO William Cho’s management philosophy, which states that the start and end of all innovation is the customer. Since taking charge of the company at the end of 2021, CEO Cho has continuously emphasized how accelerating customer experience innovation plays a critical role in improving customers’ lives. As a result of his astute direction, and as underscored by LG’s ‘Future Vision 2030’ document and recent brand reinvention, the company is actively expanding its CX innovation initiatives.

A picture of LG CEO William Cho talking with customers directly

To boost the innovation of customer experience, the company has launched a company-wide project calling on all employees to ‘meet’ with customers directly to ‘hear’ their honest feedback and concerns in order to ‘empathize’ with them. As a part of this internal project that focuses on LG’s commitment to advancing CX, executives partook in an ‘on-site’ experience program designed to ensure the implementation of customer-centric management practices and policies. Last year alone, more than 280 LG executives from the Korean headquarters visited key offline sites to see firsthand a broad range of customer contact points and associated activities, including product purchase, phone consultation, rental, delivery and after-service care.

A picture of two people sitting a their desk and doing services

Many of these executives even visited Hi-Tele Service, an LG subsidiary that provides remote customer service. While there, the executives had the valuable opportunity to hear feedback direct from LG customers – giving them insight into how and where the CX might be further improved and refined.

On top of these activities, in order to ‘hear’ from customers, LG hosted seminars where employees could share CX innovation cases as well as programs where they could directly listen to customers’ stories. And, to boost ‘empathy’ for customers, the company is carrying out company-wide activities that enable employees to set their own customer and determine the value they can provide to these customers.

Customer value innovation is not just a task for management or teams that work directly with customers. It is the job of everyone at LG to make meaningful changes by rethinking and differentiating everything the company does from the customer’s perspective.

LG is committed to providing differentiated customer value. The company will continue to pursue a customer-centric way of working – one that is based on a detailed understanding of and empathy for its customers.

Not limited to HQ, our system of actively meeting, hearing and empathizing with customers is being put into place in LG offices around the world. In a dedicated series on LG Newsroom, we will introduce how various LG teams and subsidiaries are making changes to reinvent CX, so stay tuned.

LG’s Versatile Household Helper Brings the ‘Zero Labor Home’ a Step Closer

A picture of the LG AI Agents in a set up area with LG products

Advanced technologies are making life smarter and more convenient. At home, our living spaces have been upgraded through an ever-expanding ecosystem of connected appliances, devices and technologies. However, despite the time-saving benefits of these impressive innovations, the daily chores we love to avoid haven’t gone away just quite yet. Dedicated to realizing the Zero Labor Home, LG recently brought ‘the complete liberation from housework’ a step closer with the introduction of its groundbreaking household companion, the LG Smart Home AI Agent.

A picture of two LG AI Agents

Although small in stature, LG’s Smart Home AI Agent has outsized capabilities. Not only does it act as a hub seamlessly connecting and controlling a wide range of home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) devices,1 it also independently navigates its way around the house thanks to a clever, two-legged wheel design and a raft of cutting-edge tech. Built-in cameras, microphones and various sensors enable LG’s little AI Agent to collect a variety of data from the surrounding environment, which it then leverages to effectively monitor and manage the home.

Captured through multi-modal sensing, the collected data is processed and analyzed by the LG home appliance AI platform. This makes it possible for the Smart Home AI Agent to comprehend users’ intentions such as voices and facial expressions, understand its surroundings and recommend specific courses of action (such as activating or changing the settings of a particular connected appliance or device) to create greater ease, simplicity and comfort from the burden of housework.

A picture of people looking at the LG AI Agents on display

At KBIS 2024 in Las Vegas this February, LG’s versatile Smart Home AI Agent highlighted the progress the company is making toward achieving the Zero Labor Home. Beyond its many abilities as a butler, assistant and companion, the diminutive robot is also quite the dancer. Before an enthralled audience, a group of perfectly-in-sync Smart Home AI Agents showed off their skills on the dancefloor with an endearing and entertaining choreographed routine.

Live demonstrations and short videos focusing on real-life usage scenarios at LG’s booth revealed how the AI Agent can help at home, from answering user’s questions, to greeting visitors at the door, to delivering useful notifications from connected appliances and other smart home devices.

A picture of the LG AI Agent showing the inside of a refrigerator and helping with tasks at home

In the booth’s Laundry section, the robot assumed the duties of a personal butler, offering up useful information, such as when the washing has finished, and helpful suggestions, like the best way to care for one’s laundry. The Kitchen section introduced the AI Agent as a convenient mobile hub and home assistant, seamlessly connecting with LG’s advanced kitchen appliances and presenting delicious recipes based on available ingredients. Inside the Living section, the Agent showed how it can be a valuable companion, notifying users when a visitor has arrived, inspecting each room as an indoor security officer, and even turning off the smart lightings when everyone has gone to bed.

Clean Water and Sustainable Lifestyle: LG’s Mindful Innovations

An illustration of the earth with the words '22 March World Water Day'

Observed every year on March 22, World Water Day serves as an important reminder of the need to protect and preserve what many would call our most valuable natural resource: clean, drinkable water. A long-time supporter of World Water Day, LG continues to help consumers enjoy healthy, life-sustaining water with its innovative filtration systems and state-of-the-art hygiene-enhancing technologies.

Clean and Healthy Drinking Water
Access to clean, healthy drinking water is essential to our wellbeing. Without it, neither the individual nor society as a whole can flourish. Delivering effective water purification in the home, the LG PuriCare water purifier provides reliably clean H2O at the touch of a button.

The PuriCare’s cutting-edge Tankless technology, which removes the need for a dedicated water storage tank, keeps users safe by preventing the growth of microorganisms, and maintains the freshness of the water being dispensed. Also, a 4-stage filtration system helps extract heavy metals, such as mercury and lead.1

Adding to the hygienic performance of the PuriCare water purifier is the use of LG’s UVnano™ technology.2 Operating automatically once every hour, UVnano employs ultraviolet light to maintain the cleanliness of the inside of the water outlet; reducing the presence of bacteria on the outlet’s nozzle by 99.99 percent.3

UVnano can also be found in a variety of other LG products, including the company’s advanced refrigerators. LG’s InstaView™ fridges (and models from many other lineups as well) apply UVnano tech to their built-in water dispensers, giving users easy access to hygienic water for drinking or cooking. 4

Tumbler Care Solution for Sustainable Living
Water conservation, like the availability of potable water, is a key ingredient for a sustainable future. A simple way that one can start to effect positive change is by choosing reusable cups over disposable ones. The production of single-use plastic water bottles requires substantial amounts of water, 4 whereas reusable water bottles have a much lower environmental footprint. 5

Representative of the company’s Better Life for All ESG commitment, the innovative mycup tumbler washer presents another effective way to keep one’s drinking water clean while also supporting water conservation efforts. Incorporating the eco-conscious Bubble-Jet technology, mycup hygienically cleanses users’ drinking tumblers while using only a modest amount of water. 6 The unique device also promotes sustainability through encouraging people to choose reusable tumblers instead of disposable cups.

The washer’s two cleaning courses – Quick Wash and Extra Wash – use water heated to 65 degrees Celsius and LG’s water-saving Bubble-Jet technology to ensure a thorough and sanitary cleaning. Great for a speedy wash when time is of the essence, the Quick Wash course takes just 30 seconds to run. For a complete clean and dry, the Extra Wash course first washes the tumbler with multi-directional water jets, and then gently dries it with hot, powerful airflow.

Through its innovative water-purifying and hygiene-enhancing home appliances, LG is empowering people everywhere to live healthier and more sustainably. The company hopes that everyone has the opportunity this World Water Day to reflect on their relationship with water, and consider what they can do to make a positive difference, starting with small steps at home.

Stay tuned to LG Newsroom to learn more about LG’s environmentally- responsible home appliances.

3 Internal evaluations based on test results conducted by Korean test institutes KTL (21.3) and KCL (21.2) on the UV-LED module (on Self Care mode) demonstrated 99.99 percent sterilizing effectiveness within the water outlet of the PuriCare water purifier. Results may differ depending on actual usage and other external factors.
4 According to a 2011 study by the Water Footprint Network, approximately 1.4 gallons (5.3 liters) of water are needed to produce a standard single-use plastic water or soda bottle. (https://foodprint.org/blog/plastic-water-bottle/)
5 Americans are estimated to use 120 billion disposable cups annually. Substituting a single disposable cup daily would conserve 23 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, 281 gallons of water, and prevent 16 pounds of solid waste from reaching landfills annually. In this installment of On the Job, we go inside LG Labs, LG’s marketing platform established to deliver experimental and innovative product and service experiences to its customers. We’re here to learn more about how it brings one-of-a-kind products and service experiences to customers.

As it transforms into a younger and innovative company, LG is fully committed to delivering a consistent supply of groundbreaking products and technologies that appeal to the younger generation. Playing a key role in this shift is LG Labs, a platform established to push the limits of innovation and turn imagination into reality by doing something that doesn’t come natural to most – thinking outside the box.

Since making its world debut at CES 2023, LG Labs has been presenting some of the most experimental and innovative products and services to global customers. Set up to bring a younger and more innovative feel to the LG brand, LG Labs’ purpose is to develop products that resonate with the younger generation, helping it build strong and lasting brand values that will be crucial to sustaining its leadership status into the future.

“If we discover an innovative idea that can provide new, unique experiences to customers, it doesn’t matter if it is low in business priority or small in market size,” explained Kong Dae-won, leader of LG Labs. “Even before launch, LG Labs actively engages with real customers through various channels and considers their honest feedback, providing us more opportunities to bring our potentially game-changing ideas to life.”

To decide which product to develop, LG Labs brings together experts from LG Global Marketing Group, Design Management Center, CX Center, Quality Management Center and other related departments. The questions every LG Labs expert must ask themself are: Is this something we’ve never tried before? Is it a new concept for the industry? And does it have business potential?

For example, DukeBox, which was unveiled at CES 2024, creates an entirely new product category and unique music experience by combining a vacuum tube motif with Transparent OLED tech. In fact, despite launching only a year ago, LG Labs has already invented several never-before-seen products including DUOBO, Bon Voyage and brid.zzz.

“We felt it was important to bring our innovations to customers directly and provide the opportunity to experience our innovative ideas in person,” said Kong Dae-won. “Over the past year, brid.zzz, Bon Voyage and DUOBO were featured in the LG Labs experience zone at offline events in South Korea, including Wanderlust Korea, Isegye Festival and Go Out Camp Festival. As a result, we were able to reach more than 40,000 customers and received invaluable feedback from more than 2,000 visitors.”

This year’s CES LG Labs booth was twice the size of last year’s booth, and the response from visitors was twice the scale as well. DukeBox was a big hit, especially with the big music labels in attendance as it fit seamlessly with their content and music. As a result, LG is currently in talks with a famous label on a potential collaboration that would undoubtedly strike a chord with young music fans.

LG Receives AHRI Performance Award for Seventh Consecutive Year

Sought-after Industry Accolade Confirms the Impressive Quality and
Performance of Company’s Diverse HVAC Solutions

A photo of LG Air Handling Unit (AHU) and its certification from Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Performance Award

SEOUL, Mar. 20, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) has received the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Performance Award for the seventh year in a row. The award underscores the excellence of LG’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions, which continue to set the standard for performance, efficiency and reliability.

Founded in 1953, AHRI is a respected international trade association for manufacturers of HVAC, refrigeration and water heating solutions. Its current membership includes more than 350 companies, representing countries and territories from all over the world.

The product evaluations required to determine which companies will ultimately receive an AHRI Performance Award are largely carried out by Intertek, the respected third-party testing, certification and inspection organization.

For the third consecutive year (from 2021 to 2023), a total of 62 LG HVAC solutions across six product categories successfully passed AHRI’s rigorous evaluation process. The assessed LG products represent the following HVAC categories: Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF), Unitary Small Heat Pump (USHP), Water-Cooled Chiller (WCCL), Air-Cooled Chiller (ACCL) and Air Handling Unit (AHU).

The Multi V large-capacity outdoor unit, one of the outstanding LG solutions evaluated for the latest AHRI Performance Award, leverages the company’s renowned Inverter Compressor to deliver a powerful, energy-efficient performance. Particularly popular with customers in Northern Hemisphere countries, where winters can be exceptionally harsh, LG’s premier VRF system provides reliable and effective indoor heating, even in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius (negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit).

Evaluated in the USHP category, which includes mixed-matched coils and wall-mounted heat pumps, the Multi V S is a compact yet powerful VRF solution offering low operating costs and high efficiency. Well-suited to small offices, and apartments with limited balcony space, the Multi V S employs environmentally friendly refrigerant and boasts LG’s durable Ocean Black Fin, and a variety of advanced sensing control functionalities.

Receiving the award for the first time, LG’s AHU ensures a fresh and comfortable indoor environment by controlling indoor heating and cooling, ventilating and humidification.

LG’s Core Tech sets the company’s HVAC products apart with independently developed and manufactured key components of its HVAC solutions, such as compressors and motors. Furthermore, LG maintains a proactive approach to research and development investment, focused on advancing technologies including heat exchangers, inverters and heat pumps.

“Earning the AHRI Performance Award for seven straight years is a significant milestone and a testament to the quality and dependability of LG’s HVAC solutions,” said James Lee, head of the Air Solution Business Unit at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We will continue to expand our presence in the global HVAC market, providing efficient, eco-conscious solutions that customers can depend on, year after year.”
