A picture of the LG 3D anamorphic experience on the Times Square billboard at day time

The Life’s Good Earth Day Fair is just one of LG’s initiatives to commemorate Earth Day. Last week, the company unveiled a 3D anamorphic experience on its Times Square billboard in New York City, showcasing content that highlighted some of the world’s most vulnerable and endangered as well as recovered species in need of ongoing protection. Beginning with the snow leopard and followed by the bald eagle, Galapagos sea lion and reindeer later this year, the series will portray each animal in stunning 3D that appears to be extending out of the actual display.

And, through partnerships with global edtech leader Discovery Education and the NWF, LG will host a K-12 educational series about vulnerable and endangered species. The LG Endangered Species Series will provide K-12 students with a deeper understanding of the unique qualities of endangered animals, and the role they play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem while fostering an appreciation of what makes each species special. Educators and students may access the free, standards-aligned digital resources created with Discovery Education at endangered-species-series.discoveryeducation.com.

In addition to these activations, LG is working to make Earth Day every day by developing the most innovative products that help provide consumers with significant savings through energy efficiency. As a nine-time ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year, LG launched a special Earth Day 2024 home appliance promotion, showing the company’s commitment to helping U.S. consumers make energy choices that make a difference, from cutting household utility bills to reducing impact on the environment.

[Earth Day with LG🌎] LG’s Earth Day Commitment: Taking Part in the Fight Against Plastic Pollution

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to appreciate and protect our magnificent planet. It calls upon each of us to take significant actions towards fostering a healthier environment and a brighter tomorrow. This year, the theme of Earth Day is ‘Planet vs Plastic,’ chosen to highlight the urgent need to address the widespread problem of plastic pollution. Aligned with this is the ambitious goal announced by EARTHDAY.ORG to reduce plastic production by 60 percent by 2040. From saying “no” to single-use plastics to embracing appliances made using recycled plastics, everyone can play a part in putting society on the path to a plastic-free future.

A company with a comprehensive ESG vision for a ‘Better Life For All,’ LG is involved in a wide range of initiatives that help the wellbeing of people and the planet. Its actions on plastic reduction is coupled with intensifying efforts to develop product solutions, and implement lifecycle strategies, that empower users to play a more active role in bringing about positive change. As these endeavors suggest, LG is committed to promoting a sustainable future while enhancing the wellbeing of individuals and communities worldwide.

LG’s Innovative Washer Helps Curb Microplastic Emission
Microplastics, minute plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size, have permeated oceans, soil and even the air we breathe. Their widespread distribution raises concerns for both the environment and human health.1 The washing of synthetic textiles is a significant source of microplastics released to oceans globally, accounting for up to 35 percent. This translates to around 200,000 to 500,000 tons of textile-related microplastics entering the marine environment every year.2

In an attempt to help people contribute to the mitigation of plastic pollution, LG’s new washer comes with the Microplastic Care cycle preinstalled.3 When set to this specialized cycle, the washer utilizes a ‘swinging’ motion and the TurboWash™ 360 feature to minimize fabric friction, providing gentle yet effective cleaning while reducing microplastic ‘shedding’ from garments by up to 60 percent.4

Additionally, the latest LG front-loader comes with AI Wash, which leverages the company’s Deep Learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) Direct Drive™ Motor and 6 Motion™ technology. Selecting the optimal washing motions based on fabric type, AI Wash provides improved fabric protection to help extend the lifespan of clothing.5 The new washer also optimizes detergent usage with ezDispense™, which automatically dispenses the right amount of liquid detergent for each load.6

LG’s Plastic-reducing Initiatives for a Better Life

With a staggering one million plastic bottles used every minute, and up to five trillion plastic bags used annually, plastic waste is polluting our world at an alarming rate.7 Although they undoubtedly make daily life more convenient, home appliances are a substantial contributor to the problem of plastic waste. Recognizing this, LG has greatly expanded its recycling programs for discarded appliances, fostering a sustainable cycle that shows a better way forward for industry and the world.

LG has implemented a resource circulation program that now spans 52 countries, with the LG Recycling Center in South Korea playing a central role. Raw materials such as iron, copper, aluminum and plastic are extracted from old home appliances, then sorted and processed before ultimately being ‘reborn’ as new lifestyle appliances, such as the LG Styler™ ShoeCase and ShoeCare, LG PuriCare™ AeroFurniture and LG tiiun mini.

Catering to the needs of diverse customer segments, these innovative lifestyle appliances from LG feature outer surfaces made from recycled plastics. Through making upcycling a part of its process, the company is both reinforcing sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle and presenting eco-concerned customers with a compelling range of stylish and practical solutions that speak to their values, as well as their tastes.

LG’s ongoing commitment to addressing the importance of recycled materials was also on show at IFA 2023 in Berlin, Germany, last September. The company’s exhibition booth hosted a number of activities to raise awareness of the importance of plastic recycling, including the planting of resin-pallet ‘trees’ at the LG Sustainable Village’s Upcycling Workshop Zone.

In 2022, LG recovered 472,876 tons of electronic waste from 52 countries, and has collected a cumulative total of 3,998,382 tons since 2007. The company used 32,987 tons of recycled plastics in its products in 2022, a 24 percent increase from 2021.

LG’s worldwide resource circulation program, aligned with the goals of the company’s Better Life Plan 2030, aims to increase the waste-recycling rate at LG production sites to 95 percent by 2030. Additionally, LG has set itself the target of using 600,000 tons of recycled plastics (cumulative) by 2030. Furthermore, LG intends to reach another major milestone – the collection of 8 million tons (cumulative) of discarded appliances by 2030.

LG remains resolute in the pursuit of its Better Life For All vision. The company’s state-of-the-art appliances offer convenient ways for customers to contribute to environmental protection, while its sustainability-focused recycling programs and production practices show a belief in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.

LG Completes Issuance of Public Foreign Bonds

SEOUL, Apr. 19, 2024 – LG Electronics (LG) has successfully issued a global bond of USD 800 million, marking its first in 17 years. Despite the growing global volatility, LG managed to achieve a negative New Issue Premium (NIP), indicating strong interest from global institutions.

The bonds are denominated in U.S. dollars and divided into two categories: a USD 500 million bond with a 3-year maturity and a USD 300 million bond with a 5-year maturity. The 5-year bond is classified as a Sustainability Bond.

The additional interest rate, or spread, is set at 95 basis points (bp) and 110bp above the US Treasury bond interest rate for the 3-year and 5-year bonds respectively, 40bp lower than the initially proposed spread.

LG received a substantial investment order of approximately USD 9.4 billion (around 12 times the size of the issuance) from a total of 339 institutions. This achievement, based on the maximum order book, marks LG’s bond issuance as the most successful among Korean corporate bonds in 2024, resulting in a negative NIP.

LG’s strong performance and financial stability have been recognized by global investment institutions, despite the decrease in expectations for a U.S. interest rate cut and increased global instability due to the Iran-Israel conflict. LG continues to show steady performance and is diversifying its portfolio, transitioning from a leading home appliance company to a Smart Life Solution company incorporating EV components, B2B and platform-based services.

The foreign currency bond issuance is positive for LG in terms of stable fund raising and diversification of borrowing sources. The successful re-entry into the dollar bond issuance market after a 17-year break underscores LG’s strong presence in the global financial landscape.

The funds raised aim to enhance LG’s future competitiveness through R&D and facility investments, in line with its 2030 Future Vision. The Sustainability Bond’s proceeds will be used for eco-friendly and social projects, including the construction of eco-friendly buildings.

The issuance was managed by a consortium of banks, including BNP Paribas, Citigroup, HSBC, JP Morgan, KDB and Standard Chartered Bank. LG has received stable credit ratings of Baa2 from Moody’s and BBB from Standard & Poor’s.

This issuance marks LG’s return to the public foreign bond market after 12 years, following its 2012 issuance of Swiss franc bonds valued at 215 million (equivalent to KRW 2.6 trillion at the time).

Promoting Social Inclusion by Harnessing Universal Love for Cooking

Guided by the unwavering conviction that a good life means enjoying every precious moment to the fullest, LG aims to create innovations for a better life while working with brave optimism to ensure Life’s Good for everyone, no matter where they live.

In line with World Happiness Day – celebrated annually on March 20 – LG Germany and influencer Gina Rühl paid a special visit to DAS HAUS in Neuss, spending the afternoon with children suffering from physical and mental disabilities. True to the motto ‘Happiness doubles when you share it,’ this project not only aims to put a smile on the faces of countless children, but also demonstrate the immense impact of technical helpers on the daily lives of those that need a little help.

Gina is a living example of relentless optimism and the ability to turn setbacks into strengths. After a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in the loss of her left arm, she never lost her positive attitude and fought her way back to treat every day like a blessing: “Life goes on, just a little differently.” She quickly regained her mental strength and is now grateful for every experience, demonstrating that life can still be full of joy after a life-changing incident.

That is why Gina was the perfect role model to visit DAS HAUS, a facility that aims to enable children and adolescents to live a fulfilling life on their own terms despite their disabilities. This inclusive facility offers a wide range of music, art, sports and theater courses to help them develop skills and socialize at the same time. DAS HAUS encourages them to push a little further every day and manage their lives actively and responsibly – a message both LG and Gina live by.

The focus of the event was on the joy of cooking together. As they cooked as a team, LG StanbyME provided assistance by displaying cooking tutorials and entertainment. In fact, it proved to be so useful that LG donated two of them to DAS HAUS soon after. The contact was made through nestwärme e.V., an association that supports families with chronically or terminally ill children and children with disabilities. As a token of gratitude, LG also donated an LG StanbyME to a children’s hospice of nestwärme e.V.’s choice. But the generosity did not stop there, as LG and Gina raffled off five devices to social clubs and organizations through Instagram.

The efforts of Gina Rühl and LG on World Happiness Day highlight technology’s potential to go beyond its primary purpose – it connects people and inspires new possibilities. This project underlines the company’s commitment to effecting positive change not only on special occasions but every day, in line with its Life’s Good message.

In Argentina, the love of cooking, which transcends borders, was again leveraged to spread positive change. LG Argentina employees volunteered their time to the Fundación Sí, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty by enhancing the quality of life and social inclusion of the less fortunate. Volunteers are recruited to offer housing and financial aid to underprivileged graduates to increase their access to education, and perform nightly trips to give the homeless food, medical attention and emotional support.

Last month, LG Argentina employees convened in the kitchen to bake bread for the homeless and give hope of a future where Life’s Good.

This baking event was just one of the many activities that took place in partnership with Fundación Sí. Another important action was the sponsorship of four high-achieving local university students which will support their development going forward and help them achieve their professional aspirations.

LG offices around the world are committed to creating a Better Life for All, not only through its advanced products and solutions but also through its social initiatives. Stay tuned to LG Newsroom to discover more initiatives designed to realize a future where Life’s Good for people and the planet.

LG CEO Advocates Leadership as Key to Success in Latest ‘CEO F.U.N. Talk’

Since taking the helm as LG’s CEO at the end of 2021, William Cho has been a strong proponent of transparency, especially in nurturing relationships and open communication within the company’s workforce. This dedication to honest conversation inspired Mr. Cho to launch the ‘CEO F.U.N. Talk’ series, a forum for him to interact with LG employees on critical topics and the company’s future direction. The first CEO F.U.N. Talk of 2024, held on April 15, focused on ‘leadership,’ a vital component in the corporate sphere that merits regular discussion. Leadership was also the central theme at the first CEO F.U.N. Talk of 2023.

As LG aims to transform into a high-performance organization capable of consistent growth, CEO Cho underscores the need for employees to demonstrate “a sense of leadership.” Prior to this month’s talk, Mr. Cho conducted a survey to understand employees’ views of a high-performance organization and its implications for LG. “A high-performance organization is one that persistently pursues excellence to deliver outstanding results and promotes mutual growth between the company and its employees,” stated CEO Cho. He further explained that a passion for continuous learning, goal setting and skill development are essential.

Furthermore, to surpass competitors, LG must provide customers with unique experiences and significant value, thereby creating a unique competitive advantage. Mr. Cho highlighted how effective leadership at all levels drives high performance and successful organizational transformation. “The power of a participatory organizational culture amplifies when each member displays leadership and adheres to the A.C.E. principles,” he said.

CEO Cho’s A.C.E. principles include: ‘Aim for Clarity’ by setting measurable goals, breaking them down into stages and presenting clear results; ‘Conduct with Agility’ to quickly identify key issues and foster a productive work environment while also prioritizing tasks effectively; and ‘Excellence in Process’ – encouraging employees to actively define their roles and responsibilities, enhance collaboration with stakeholders, meticulously analyze all processes and allocate resources appropriately.

Mr. Cho also stressed the significance of the right leadership mindset. He asserted, “Strong willpower and persistence, rather than talent or intelligence, are crucial for achieving your dreams.” He added that every employee should not only lead their own change but also guide others in the broader transformation of LG into a high-performance organization.

Mr. Cho further highlighted organizational culture as a cornerstone for the company’s future growth and evolution. A positive and empowering corporate culture requires an environment where employees can enjoy their work and have the flexibility to change the way that they work to grow and reach their full potential. In line with this, ‘REINVENT LG’ encourages all LG employees to collaborate and innovate. Initially launched to foster a healthy organizational culture, REINVENT LG has extended to the company’s entire value chain and has become a catalyst for ‘high-performance’ management innovation.

Wrapping up the talk, CEO Cho outlined three focal points: ‘Product,’ encompassing business models and strategies associated with LG’s products and services; ‘Process,’ denoting the company’s operational methods; and ‘People,’ emphasizing the enhancement of employees’ skills. By focusing on these pivotal areas and applying its management and leadership principles, LG anticipates short-term improvements in sales and operating profit, and long-term enhancements in its business portfolio and corporate value.

In relation to ‘Product,’ Mr. Cho highlighted how LG is mitigating the impacts of a sluggish global economy by concentrating on its subscription business. This new business model has proven successful despite a decrease in demand in the home appliance market. Discussing ‘Process,’ he expanded on ‘Affectionate Intelligence,’ LG’s AI solution crafted from customer experience data, and explored various AI applications. In the ‘People’ segment, the CEO introduced several systematic training programs and support initiatives that LG is currently implementing.

The tenth CEO F.U.N. Talk took place at LG Twin Tower in Seoul, South Korea, and was attended by over 10,000 employees. Throughout 2024, CEO Cho plans to engage and communicate with more LG employees by extending the program to other business locations in Korea, including Changwon, Pyeongtaek and Gumi.

LG OLED evo TVs Receive Eco-Friendly Certification for Fourth Consecutive Year

LG 2024 OLED evo TVs Demonstrate Company’s Dedication to
Sustainability and Highlight Premium Value of LG OLED TVs

SEOUL, April 16, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) continues to receive recognition for its steadfast commitment to sustainability and eco-conscious practices. LG 2024 OLED evo TVs achieved Reducing CO21 and Measured CO22 certifications from the Carbon Trust3 and Environmentally Evaluated Mark4 from Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS), marking the fourth consecutive year of consistent acknowledgement for LG’s ESG initiatives. LG’s newest OLED TVs have also earned their second successive Recycled Content certification5, further demonstrating LG’s sense of environmental responsibility.

The Carbon Trust works to usher the globe into a future of zero carbon emission by assessing the environmental impact of a product’s entire life cycle, from production and distribution to use and disposal. SGS certification focuses on resource efficiency and the presence of hazardous substances, while Intertek measures the percentage of recycled materials used. The organizations’ respective approaches promote responsible consumption practices across diverse industries and contribute to the broader goal of sustainability worldwide.

Notably, the self-lit nature of LG OLED TVs garners significant attention in stringent sustainability evaluations. Unlike LCD TVs, LG OLED TVs do not require a backlight, meaning a simpler structure and fewer necessary components. For instance, LG’s 65-inch OLED evo, made of ultra-light composite fiber, requires only 40 percent of the plastic typically used in an LCD TV of the same size screen and weighs 20 percent less.

Based on the estimated sales of LG OLED TVs this year, the total amount of plastic used in LG OLED TVs from 2022 to 2024 is expected to be 45,000 tons lower than that of LCD TVs sold during the same period. The reduction in plastic usage will lead to a decrease in carbon emissions of approximately 234,000 tons a year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest. This number translates to one-third of the area of Seoul or about 31,000 soccer fields.

Recycled plastics account for about 20 percent of the plastic used in the manufacturing of all LG TVs, including OLED TVs, equal to around 4,000 tons of recycled waste plastic annually.

Beyond environmental activities, LG’s various ESG initiatives have received praise from reputable domestic and international organizations. In 2023, LG was named in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the twelfth year in a row. The DJSI World ranks in the top ten percent of the largest 2,500 global companies based on their long-term economic, environmental, social and governance practices. The company’s inclusion on this prestigious list for twelve consecutive years is a significant milestone, as LG is the sole South Korean company in the Leisure Equipment & Products and Consumer Electronics industry category to achieve this feat.

Furthermore, LG has received the ‘Comprehensive A grade’ from the ESG Evaluation and Rating Announcement of Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS) for three years running, and last year, the company earned its fourth back-to-back ‘A’ rating from the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) ESG Rating.

“LG OLED TVs lead the market as the ultimate choice for premium viewing experiences, while also going beyond to set the bar for ESG standards,” said Baik Seon-pill, leader of the LG Home Entertainment Company’s Product Planning Division. “LG will remain devoted to continuing efforts toward creating a better planet for all.”

An exciting development for Signature Kitchen Suite is the collaboration with internationally acclaimed designer Patricia Urquiola, who has designed a sculptural cabinet for the brand’s under-counter drawer fridge. Ideal for modern places, where the boundary between living room and kitchen is frequently blurred or erased, Urquiola’s cabinet transforms the ultra-premium brand’s home appliance into a gorgeous piece of furniture. The amalgamation of Signature Kitchen Suite’s superior technology with Urquiola’s design artistry has resulted in an elevated lifestyle solution with a luxurious, handcrafted touch. The cabinet is available in three modularities and two finishes – wood or Cimento tiles.

Visitors to the showroom can also see SKINS Club; an ultra-elegant cabinet for the Signature Kitchen Suite under-counter wine cellar designed in collaboration with local Milanese architectural and design firm m2Atelier. A must-have for the connoisseur, the stunning SKINS Club features separate compartments for storing wine and cigars and offers customizable finishes for personalized look.

An Exclusive Collaboration of Technology and Artistry

LG Accelerates Its B2B Medical Device Business, Headlined by Full Lineup of Diagnostic Monitors

With the Addition of a 5MP Diagnostic Monitor, Company’s Comprehensive Range of
Medical Monitors Now Boasts 13 Different Types of Display

Doctor looking at images displayed on LG’s diagnostic monitor

SEOUL, April 12, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is accelerating its B2B medical device business, leveraging a full lineup of diagnostic monitors including the new 21HQ613D which was recently cleared by FDA for sale in the United States. Designed specifically for digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis, the 21HQ613D is a 21.3-inch 5-megapixel (MP) IPS diagnostic monitor that delivers high-definition radiological images and maintains consistent image quality through its internal front calibration sensor and calibration software.

The 21HQ613D offers exceptional definition and brightness, its LG IPS display providing a resolution of 2,048 x 2,560, a luminance of 1100cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 1800:1. Suitable for reviewing various types of medical images, including breast MRIs, CT scans and ultrasound, the diagnostic monitor features an internal front sensor that removes the need for an external calibration device. With LG Calibration Studio Medical software, users can conveniently conduct DICOM calibration and quality assurance tests that comply with international quality control standards for medical monitors.

The 21HQ613D also incorporates helpful features to assist users in the close examination of medical images, such as Focus View Mode and Pathology Mode. Controllable with either a mouse or keyboard, Focus View Mode lets users focus in on a specific part of an image, dimming the rest of the screen in order to highlight the selected area. Pathology Mode provides image clarity and accuracy as if looking into a microscope. Additionally, Multi-Resolution Mode (5, 3 and 2MP) makes it possible to quickly adjust screen resolution to suit the type of image being viewed.

For a more productive and organized workspace, this diagnostic monitor supports daisy-chaining via DisplayPort connection. An easy and efficient way of linking monitors, daisy-chaining helps reduce desk clutter and simplify cable management. LG’s new diagnostic monitor also offers a comfortable user experience thanks to an ergonomic stand with adjustable tilt, height, swivel and bi-directional pivoting functionality.

The diagnostic monitor’s five hotkeys improve user convenience by providing a quick and simple way to adjust settings or switch between modes. Meanwhile, the Presence Sensor helps to conserve energy, automatically shutting off the display if no motion has been detected for five minutes. The Down Light and Wall Light features enable users to read documents when the room is dim or completely dark, the former illuminating the desk or table surface below the monitor and the latter casting light on the area behind it. For a better viewing experience, the Auto Luminance Sensor automatically adjusts screen brightness according to ambient conditions.

With the 21HQ613D, LG is targeting rapidly growing global demand for mammography monitors. According to an industry analysis report by Persistence Market Research, the global mammography market is projected to reach a valuation of USD 6.9 billion by 2023, with a CACR of 11.6% from 2023 to 2033.*

LG’s expanded lineup of diagnostic monitors covers the major display needs of large hospitals. Along with the new 5MP model, the company provides 3MP monitor – primarily used for reading radiological images – and 8MP and 12MP products equipped with PBP (Picture-by-picture) mode, which allows simultaneous review of multiple diagnostic images. In total, LG now offers 13 types of medical monitors, including 5 diagnostic monitors, 5 surgical monitors and 3 monitors for clinical use.

LG is committed to delivering advanced monitor solutions for the modern healthcare environment. In 2023, LG secured a significant contract with Centrale d’Achat de l’Informatique Hospitalière (CAIH), France’s hospital IT purchasing center, to provide a total of eight types of medical monitors. The contract, valued at EUR 10 million (approximately KRW 15 billion) over four years, represents the company’s largest agreement since entering the medical imaging device business in 2016.

“Designed for reviewing mammograms and breast tomosynthesis, LG’s new diagnostic monitor is a high-quality medical imaging display offering easy management and useful functionality,” said YS Lee, vice president and head of the IT business unit of LG Business Solutions Company. “We will continue to provide the medical sector with cutting-edge solutions leveraging our innovative display technologies.”

Unlocking Potential With ‘STUDIO341’: LG’s Commitment to Nurturing Innovation

LG remains steadfast in its commitment to actively nurture ideas with the potential to fuel the company’s future growth. By fostering a corporate culture that not only encourages challenges but also embraces failures as stepping stones to success, LG aims to embody the principles that have been at the heart of CEO William Cho’s leadership philosophy since his tenure began. CEO Cho consistently champions the ‘Brave Optimist’ mindset, inspiring everyone to boldly undertake challenges and relentlessly innovate, anchored in the belief that the customer is always the key to unlocking solutions.

An illustration of the LG logo and studio341

A prime embodiment of this ethos is ‘STUDIO341,’ an initiative launched by LG last year. This program is designed to identify and cultivate in-house ventures that encapsulate the spirit of challenge and innovation, a mindset that has been instrumental in propelling LG from its humble beginnings as Goldstar in 1958 to its current status as a global leader in home appliances. The ‘341’ in ‘STUDIO341’ serves as a poignant reminder for LG’s ‘Brave Optimists’ to stay true to the company’s roots, symbolizing the original street address of Goldstar in Busan, Korea’s second-largest city.

The initiative welcomed anyone with a creative idea that can solve a problem worth solving and provide a new experience to customers. The response was impressive, with over 100 internal submissions received.

A picture of a man standing on stage and presenting to the crowd

In the previous year, LG shortlisted the top thirteen ideas – one more than the originally intended twelve – which were further narrowed down to six during an internal IR event. This process involved evaluating the ideas based on their potential to provide unique customer experiences. The selection criteria encompassed business value, feasibility, potential impact and team capabilities.

The chosen teams were relocated to an external office to be able to fully immerse themselves in developing their in-house venture ideas. By March 2024, the top six teams had the opportunity to present their business proposals at the ‘STUDIO341 Demo Day’ in Seoul, in front of LG executives and potential investors.

After thorough deliberation, the top five teams selected for spinoff were unveiled: ‘MASKIT,’ a mobile ticketing and admission service for performing arts that removes the necessity for queuing; ‘FreshGo,’ an original cold chain transportation solution that leverages individual refrigeration technology; ‘Cucumber,’ a platform focused on local food pickup services; ‘Found Objet,’ a digital transaction platform for recycled plastic materials; and ‘X-UP,’ a solution for diagnosing and maintaining golf courses using robots and heat mapping technology.

A picture of a man presenting about X-UP

Meanwhile, LG partnered with Bluepoint, a partnership-driven Korean startup accelerator, to leverage their ability to objectively assess the teams’ capabilities and provide more effective support. This approach has helped streamline the whole process to a year, with six months for selection and six months for development. During the process, each team will receive a joint investment from LG and Bluepoint up to a maximum of KRW 400 million.

A picture of people trying out products and technologies at the LG NOVA showcase

In parallel, LG is intensifying its collaboration with global startups, as exemplified by its partnership with Amwell, a U.S. telemedicine company, to provide remote medical treatment solutions across North America. The company also aims to evaluate the viability of services in prevention, diagnosis, post-management and recovery, among others.

LG NOVA, LG’s North America Center for Innovation, launched its “Mission For the Future” by presenting the Eureka Park showcase at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. It also leveraged its influence to introduce startups operating in the digital healthcare field, such as XR Health, Mindset Medical and C.Light Technologies.

Stay tuned to LG Newsroom to see how else the company is revolutionizing the customer experience for all.

Adding a Human Touch to AI: LG’s Affectionate Intelligence

An illustration a man and a woman next to LG products with the words 'LG redefines AI as Affectionate Intelligence'

AI is a buzzword across all industries. We are currently living in the age of AI and, while many are focused on the evolution of AI technology itself, LG is focused more on how AI can make a difference to customers in their daily lives.

At CES 2024, LG redefined AI as ‘Affectionate Intelligence’ with the belief that AI should deliver more caring, empathetic and attentive customer experiences. So, what does LG’s ‘Affectionate Intelligence’ entail?

An illustration of the three explanations of Affectionate Intelligence

First, LG has access to a wealth of data from the 500 to 700 million LG products in use worldwide, many of which have AI-supported intelligent sensors that are optimized to learn and analyze users’ life patterns. LG has the unique opportunity to draw on the ‘real life’ data gathered from these connected devices and, with this ‘Real-time Life Intelligence,’ can provide valuable insight into customer-device interactions, including their environment, behavior pattern and emotional state.

Second, the LG AI Brain – a powerful engine driven by LG’s large language model –can forecast consumers’ needs based on user-product interactions and contextual learning, perform reasoning processes and generate optimal solutions by orchestrating the action of physical devices. This ‘Orchestrated Intelligence’ allows LG to ultimately provide intelligent services and experiences tailored to customers’ lives.

Above all, AI needs to be accountable, work equally well for all users, promote safe and intended behavior, secure personal data and control access to it. To ensure ‘Responsible Intelligence,’ LG has applied LG Shield, the company’s data security system, across the entire process of collecting, storing and utilizing customer data, ensuring protection at every stage.

With these three pillars, LG is focused on adding a human touch to AI. So, what does ‘Affectionate Intelligence’ look like in the real world?

Enhanced Customer Experience in the Home
An illustration of the customer experiences powered by affectionate intelligence

With almost seven decades of customer-facing business experience, LG has a deep understanding of customers, especially in the home. Leveraging Affectionate Intelligence, LG enhances the customer experience by providing personalized and tailored services through its home products and solutions.

LG’s Smart Home AI Agent, an all-around home manager and companion, showcases the company’s commitment to realizing its “Zero Labor Home” vision. This versatile household helper can not only act as a hub to seamlessly connect and control home appliances and IoT devices, but also even navigate around the home and, through multi-modal sensing, collect a variety of data to monitor and manage the home.

LG’s home appliances, such as the refrigerator with MoodUP™, are equipped with on-device AI chips, allowing for more natural, intuitive interaction with LG ThinQ app. What’s more, appliances compatible with LG ThinQ UP can continuously receive software updates.

LG’s latest washers are equipped with AI Direct Drive Motor™ tech which automatically determines the ideal cycle,1 enabling users to take better care of their garments. Among the company’s diverse air solutions, the new LG DUALCOOL™ residential air conditioner employs the Human Detection Sensor™, which can detect the location of room occupants2 and change airflow mode accordingly.

When it comes to enjoying the latest movie or your favorite show on LG OLED TVs, the new α (Alpha) 11 AI Processor offers an immersive viewing experience by personalizing picture settings, TV contents and apps. It can even provide recommendations based on past viewing habits through AI Concierge, and if you need assistance or want to learn about new features, the AI Chatbot is ready to help.

For those needing to stay productive, LG gram Pro laptops are equipped with Intel® AI Boost, enabling top performance for AI workloads even without a network connection, enhancing the customer experience with top performance even on the go.

Improved Customer Experience on the Road
An illustration of the software-defined vehicles

Software is not only transforming our homes but also revolutionizing our commercial spaces, virtual environments and experiences on the road. Software-defined Vehicles (SDV) are now a reality, and LG is actively participating in this evolution with a focus on improving the in-vehicle customer experience.

While features like in-car entertainment and navigation are already commonplace, SDV’s bring a new dimension. Advanced software uses innovative technologies to dramatically improve computing power in car cockpits and allows users to remotely upgrade their vehicles with new features, akin to apps on their smartphones, without the need for a dealership or repair shop visit.

At CES, LG shared its vision for cars as a ‘living space on wheels’ powered by SDV solutions. The company introduced LG AlphaWare, its suite of software solutions for SDV. This includes versatile middleware, platforms, and services, creating personalized and immersive in-vehicle experience for SDV utilizing, for example, AR/MR and AI technologies as well as being flexible and scalable base for all the domain of SDV.

Based on ‘Affectionate Intelligence,’ LG will continue to unveil new products and services not for the sake of innovation but to provide tangible benefits to consumers and improve their lives. Stay tuned to LG Newsroom to see how the company continues to connect and expand customer experiences across various spaces, going beyond the home, in its journey to become a smart life solution company.
